A bottle of wine is the result of hundreds of decisions. When to pick. What yeast to use. Oak, concrete, clay or steel. How long to mature. When to blend & bottle.   There’s no single way for making wine. Every vineyard, vintage & winemaker brings something different

Did you know that South Africa has a number of wine regions ,& routes, and no 2 are the same 🍇 The vineyards grow on soils over 500 million years old, cooled by 2 oceans, at everything from sea level to high mountain valleys. That is why 1 country can produce this much variety.

Heritage in South African wine is not kept behind glass 🍷 The first wine was made at the Cape in 1659, & almost everything since has been handed on rather than put away. Gables & Vineyards, a grape variety we developed, & a sparkling category that started as 1 man's brave idea.

South African wine isn't just wine 🌿 It's the light on a Swartland hillside at 6 in the morning. Vines older than the people farming them. Fynbos growing right up to the last row, and a family name on the gate. It's a story that gets told every time a bottle of wine is shared.

Driving through the South African winelands this time of year, you'll spot something deliberate growing between the rows. It's important for a lot of South African farmers, both organic and not, as part of greater sustainability efforts. They're called cover crops.

A visit to Joostenburg's vineyards tells the story of their organic philosophy. With no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers in the vineyards, they focus on building healthy soils, biodiversity, & balance across their mixed farm of vines, livestock & produce.

"biodynamic" - what does this actually mean? Biodynamics builds on a similar foundation to organic farming - healthier soils, biodiversity, no synthetic chemicals but takes it further, treating the entire farm as 1 living, self-sustaining organism. – at Burnaby, British Columbia

Some things simply can't be rushed. For decades, these old vines have weathered seasons, adapted to change. This Old Vine Day, we celebrate the vineyards, the people, & the wines that remind us that some of life's brightest moments can come from the oldest roots.

The vineyards in South Africa may look ""asleep"" right now, but they're hard at work. Winter is a time of quiet transformation. The vines are dormant & bare, but beneath the surface, important processes are underway. 📷 Jasper Raats from Longridge Wine Estate in Stellenbosch
