Notes from Kyle Whittingham's Monday presser (following Western Michigan): ▪️On the Western Michigan game: Whittingham said he’ll never forget it, calling the finish about as dramatic as it gets. There wasn’t much celebrating in the locker room afterward. He gave Western Michigan credit but said there was no excuse for the way Michigan played. Whittingham said he was up until 5 a.m. after the game. ▪️On the clock decision: Whittingham said he was unaware of the Hawkeye system at the time. He believes officials ultimately got the call right and said everyone involved is fairly satisfied with the explanation. ▪️What’s most fixable from Saturday: Whittingham said most of the issues were on the offensive side. Michigan had sloppy penalties that killed drives, committed three turnovers, struggled on third down and couldn’t establish the run. Because the offense wasn’t scoring, Western Michigan was able to control the clock and shorten the game. “No shortage of things to fix this week.” ▪️On the offensive line: After reviewing the film, Whittingham said the O-line didn’t play as poorly as it may have looked. It wasn’t a great performance, but pass protection was solid overall and he thought the group played “alright.” ▪️On the lack of a running game: Whittingham said Michigan didn’t run with enough violence. There was too much east/west running and not enough getting downhill north/south. ▪️On Bryce Underwood: “He’s our QB right now. It’s not something that’s infinite. We need to see improvement...” Whittingham said the coaches also have a responsibility to help Underwood improve, but made it clear Michigan needs better play at quarterback. Underwood has all the physical tools, but still needs to develop. ▪️How much time does Underwood get? Whittingham said they need to see continued progress and a level of play that helps Michigan win games. They understand Underwood is young and don’t want to panic. He’s a big-time talent, and they’ll stay the course for now. But Whittingham stressed that eventually, every player at every position has to perform at the required level. ▪️On Tommy Carr: Whittingham said Carr doesn’t get rattled and is constantly in the film room. He’s also getting reps with the first-team offense. The current split is roughly 80/20 between Underwood and Carr. ▪️Sense of urgency: Whittingham said there’s now an added sense of urgency within the team. Michigan needs to put Western Michigan behind them and turn its full attention to Oklahoma. ▪️On the pass defense: Whittingham thought Michigan was solid overall. The defense didn’t allow any explosive plays, although he noted Western Michigan wasn’t really attempting many shots downfield. ▪️On tackling: Michigan missed only five tackles, which Whittingham viewed as a positive. His goal is to keep missed tackles in the single digits each game. However, practices will become more physical moving forward. Michigan didn’t do much live tackling during camp in an effort to keep players healthy. #GoBlue

I’m pretty sure the officials got this right. When the clock hits :00, that’s actually :00.9. There’s technically nine-tenths of a second remaining until there’s actually no time left. The solution here is for football to use milliseconds when under a minute, like hockey and basketball.
