Earlier this month, we invited African film critics to join the African Film Press roster of independent jurors — three-person juries that watch, deliberate, and award the AFP Critics Prize, next at Kilifi Creek Festival (Oct 23–31) and S16 Film Festival in Lagos this December. Here's who responded: 36 critics from 11 countries — South Africa and Nigeria leading, with responses from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Ethiopia, and our diaspora in France, the UAE, and the US. 44% are women — and ten of the sixteen women are based in Nigeria and South Africa. Most file the reviews in writing; a growing number are video-first. Several have served on festival juries before. Their bylines run from Variety to Africa Is a Country to AFP's own What Kept Me Up, in English and French. One snapshot, not a census — but a strong lineup. The Kilifi Creek and S16 juries will be drawn from this pool. #AfricanCinema #FilmCriticism #AfricanFilmPress

Nigeria’s Agbara Nla: The Return leads AFP’s African-film box office ranking this week, with approximately US$103,538 across FilmX’s Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia reporting. The wider tracker currently covers Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia.
AFP Africa Box Office | Weekend Ending 11 October 2026 What are people watching in African cinemas, and what are African films earning in their home markets? African Film Press brings publicly available box office figures together on one page so readers can follow both. The third edition of our Africa Box Office contains 65 reported results for 42 films. Its current figures come from Egypt, South Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia, plus FilmX’s combined reporting for Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia. The page has two current rankings: a Continental Top 10 for films of any origin, and a Continental Top 10 for African films identified by their filmmakers, stories and settings. A third ranking compares African films’ highest recorded earnings in a home market from 2020 to the present. “Verity” leads the all-films ranking at approximately US$232,976 across the current reporting set. “Agbara Nla: The Return” leads the African-film ranking at approximately US$103,538 from FilmX’s Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia reporting. “7 Dogs” continues to lead the 2020-to-present ranking. Each result shows its local-currency figure and reporting dates. You can also see results from previous weeks. Explore AFP Africa Box Office: africanfilmpress.com/africa-… We hope the page encourages more regular local box office reporting and grows into a fuller view of cinema activity across Africa as more countries make their figures public.
