It was my honour to address the @WHOWPRO Regional Committee one last time. But 10 months is still a long way to go and we can still do a lot together. So my asks for the health leaders of the region are:
1. Approve the next increase in assessed contributions at next year's World Health Assembly.
2. Consolidate the hard work we have done through the transformation, prioritization and realignment, to build a @WHO that is better positioned to serve Member States with neutrality, impartiality and integrity.
3. Engage actively in the reform of the global health architecture. Make sure it reflects the needs of this Region and puts countries at the centre.
4. Finalize negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing annex, so that the Pandemic Agreement can enter the ratification process and come into force.

Young people are helping shape the future of global health. I was so pleased to see the new members of the @WHOYouthCouncil at the #WHS2026: bit.ly/4s1AP1G
I look forward to your ideas, your leadership and, importantly, to being challenged by you.
Together, for a healthier, safer, fairer world.

.@MOH_Kenya has confirmed a third case of #Ebola among the contacts of the first patient. The new patient was already in the quarantine and is now receiving supportive clinical care.
This early detection demonstrates the importance of contact tracing and surveillance measures. @WHO continues to support.

A third case of Ebola (Bundibugyo virus disease) has been confirmed in Kenya. The patient was already in quarantine and is receiving care. There is no evidence of community transmission. #EbolaAlertKE

Very encouraging to see that @WHO scored the highest level of trust among all tracked international institutions in this survey by @RockefellerFdn and @focaldataHQ.
These findings underscore that people continue to value collective action and recognize that health security depends on countries working together to prevent, prepare for and respond to shared threats.

Kenya has confirmed a second case of Bundibugyo #Ebola, a close family member of the first case who was already in quarantine.
Both cases are linked, with no evidence of spread in the wider community.

My asks to the @WHOEMRO Health leaders and delegates as they gather for #EMRC73:
1. Approve the next increase in @WHO assessed contributions at next year’s World Health Assembly.
2. Build a WHO that is better positioned to serve Member States, with neutrality and impartiality, and focusing on integrity.
3. Engage actively in the process of reform of the global health architecture.
4. Finalise negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing annex, so the Pandemic Agreement can finally enter into the ratification process, and into force.
5. Choose peace. That is the choice that many countries in this region – and beyond – must make. There can be no health without peace.

.@MOH_Kenya identified a second case of #Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus, a close contact of the first patient, who has already been in quarantine. This shows that surveillance and contact tracing efforts are working. He has been receiving supportive clinical care since the onset of the symptoms.
Since the outbreak began in the #DRC in May 2026, @WHO has worked closely with Kenya and other countries across the region to prepare for potential imported cases of Ebola, including on disease surveillance, contact tracing and clinical management.

Sexual and reproductive health and rights are among the greatest public health and development achievements of our time, helping millions of women gain greater control over their health, education and economic futures.
Yet progress cannot be taken for granted. Expanded access to contraception, safe abortion services, and advances in cervical cancer prevention and care are among the landmark gains that have improved health outcomes and strengthened the agency of women and girls worldwide.
At a moment of profound global change, we must continue to champion evidence-based policies that protect rights, expand opportunities and advance health for all.
In a new paper published in @TheLancet, my colleague Dr @PascaleAllotey and I reflect on why safeguarding and advancing these essential rights remains critical for the health and well-being of women and girls, their families, and their communities.

Whatever the circumstances surrounding the loss of a baby, every woman deserves respectful and dignified healthcare that acknowledges her loss, provides support for any psychological issues she may face, and empowers her to make future decisions about having a child.
I welcome Prime Minister @andyburnham’s commitment to improving maternity care in the #UK. I hope it will also encourage greater attention to the care and support women deserve around the world. @WHO stands ready to support. #HealthForAll

Three years ago, just a few months into his medical residency, Dr Harara found himself pushed to the limits when the conflict in #Gaza escalated.
Despite loss, fear, exhaustion and multiple displacements, he kept showing up for his patients.
His story reflects the resilience of health workers across Gaza, who carry the same losses as everyone around them while continuing to care for others.
Constant exposure to traumatic events has left everyone in Gaza distressed, underscoring need of mental health and psychological support.
@WHO and partners, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, are doing all they can to sustain and strengthen mental health services across Gaza.
This includes training health workers, integrating mental health care into health facilities, establishing inpatient and outpatient facilities, provision of medication and ensuring support for health workers. But much more is needed to respond to the scale of the need.
WHO calls for:
🔹Protection of health care.
🔹Unimpeded humanitarian access and an expedited flow of aid into Gaza.
🔹Continued support for the health response, which remains underfunded.
The best medicine is peace.

.@WHO welcomes the adoption of the #UNGA Political Declaration on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, and commends co-facilitators Armenia and Rwanda for their leadership in building consensus. This important milestone reflects a shared commitment to equity, global solidarity and collective action to make the world safer from future pandemics. We also welcome the ambition to successfully conclude negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing Annex.

Teach them young!
In #Vanuatu, School Health Week brought health promotion and services closer to students.
Students moved through a series of health stations, offering a range of services.
This included having their eyes, ears, teeth, nutritional status and mental wellbeing checked.
Receiving services such as deworming, eligible immunizations and treatment for certain conditions.
Learning about nutrition, oral health, malaria, violence prevention, hygiene and other ways to protect their health.
And not least, engaging in physical activity! .
The week was built entirely around local needs.
Communities helped shape and organize the response, while health and education authorities worked alongside schools, local leaders, families and partners, drawing on people, services and relationships already in place.

As a father and grandfather, I want the same for every girl as I want for my own daughters and granddaughters: to grow up healthy, safe, and free to pursue their dreams.
But the reality for millions of girls is very different.
Every year, around 21 million adolescent girls become pregnant in low- and middle-income countries. One in four girls who have been in a relationship experiences physical or sexual violence from a partner. And many girls still miss out on vaccines that could protect them from cervical cancer later in life.
These are not just statistics. Behind every number is a girl whose health, choices and future are at stake.
This #DayOfTheGirl, let’s commit to give every girl the chance to live a healthy life and fulfil her potential. No exceptions.

.@Chikwe_I and I just met with Health Minister @ViktorLiashko to discuss the health needs across #Ukraine. The Minister shared his concerns over attacks on health infrastructure, especially on the medicine supply chain, which deprives people of access even to basic medicines. @WHO continues to call for the protection of health care and health facilities everywhere. We will continue to support the delivery of health care in 🇺🇦, and preparedness for another challenging winter with energy disruption to hospitals. #WHS2026

Nothing symbolizes #Germany’s support more than its hosting of part of @WHO right here in Berlin: the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence.
At the #WHS2026, I reiterate our ambition that, through this Hub, by 2030, every country will be able to detect and understand any new health threat within 24 hours of its emergence
To get there, we will build on trusted digital foundations and harness new tools, including AI-powered simulation, to turn early signals into early action.
I thank Germany for its steadfast commitment and leadership, as well as our founding partners, the @rki_de and @ChariteBerlin for their continued support.
In a connected world, health security cannot be built country by country. It must be built together.

The story of the @WHO Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence Hub began on 23 October 2020, at the height of the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an urgent Zoom call with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Five years later, the Hub has grown from an ambitious early-warning concept into a fully operational global anchor for health security that spans more than 160 countries and more than 190 partner organizations. #WHS2026
