It’s about one week to the hour since my son Noah and I chainsawed our way through massive poison ivy vines and trees out of the Lost Corners neighborhood of Morganton NC. At that time rain was pouring sideways and leaves were flying upwards. This leaf is about 8 meters above the deck, out our second story window, still suspended by two gossamer spider threads. I think it’s a powerful metaphor for the ongoing tenuousness of our situation and communities still in suspended and compromised circumstances, held together by gossamer threads of community and faith. But it’s also worth pointing out that spiderwebs, which appear fine and fragile, are stronger than steel when compared by weight. Overall, this still-suspended leaf one week out is an awe-inspiring testament, one week out, to the power of nature over us still… as readers of _Wilderness EMS 1e_ know, the anthropologically-driven definition of wilderness medicine and wilderness EMS. #thisisanthropology #thisispublichealth #HurricaneHelene #resilience #leavesinthewind #WEMSText @WEMSText

Darryl Macias is a #wildmed national treasure. In a command performance, Darryl translates the summary of this entire @WildMedSociety podcast from English into fluent French and Spanish, both languages in which he is fluent—#lifegoals. And in Spanish and in French, one of the only words Dr. Macias finds untranslatable from the English is "wilderness medicine". I learned the lesson exploring international editions of @WEMSText & the new IBSC #WildernessParamedic credential: "wilderness" in some ways is a very American term that doesn't translate linguistically or culturally into many other countries. If you speak multiple languages, can "wilderness medicine" be translated into your language? What are the linguistic or cultural anthropological constraints on that translation? What do you think about the WMS podcast summarizing its content in other languages at the end, or is English such the lingua franca of the medical world that it can or should suffice? soundcloud.com/wildernessmed…

Adding this to the #WEMSText 2e! @LippincottMed
Fall of 1973 saw the publishing of the first newsletter 'Search and Rescue Magazine'. A subscription would cost you $3. Articles included 'A Child is Lost' and 'Mountain Search for the Lost Victim'. #nasarhq50

Hey, they are still awesome transport tools for short distances! It’s just they are an extrication tool for short movement, not a medical tool for immobilization. Rock on, @LEGO_Group rescue heroes! @WildMedSociety @lippincott

There's no doubt that the work that #FirstResponders & #HealthcareHeroes do has an impact on #MentalHealth and well-being. It's been exacerbated by a 2-year long pandemic also. Lots of great work on #PsychologicalFirstAid by Laura McGladrey. youtube.com/watch?v=B7xeVBZD… #NAEMSP2022

This year at #NAEMSP2022, I’m excited to be doing the @WEMSMDC pre-conference to prepare for my new role as Med Director of @ARStatePark. Cool swag, and even cooler faculty! Tons of great pre-con’s to choose from every year to boost your #EMSDoc game.

Great discussion about scope of practice in #WEMS & "horizontal hierarchy". If you have a kayaker w/ a broken leg in swiftwater, who do you want going to the patient and why? 1) Board certified Ortho, or 2) Swiftwater-trained first responder #NAEMSP2022
