Thanks for this. Funny how people fear our existence. I’ve known exactly how to reach my bio dad for over 3 years and have never reached out to him. We aren’t wanting to invade lives, we are trying to find our roots. Adoption has too many hurtful secrets. Time to change that.

Your piece was beautiful; these letters are rich and profound. I caution that one cannot unfind parents who may be deeply flawed and troubled so people should proceed prepared for the chance of disappointing and prosaic reunions and the burdens they will inherit as a result.

"American Baby" is a "hawk's eye version (of #adoption), then down... really into the granular detail of Margaret's life" -@GabrielleGlaser . Writing about her friend David's life was an honor of a lifetime, and even she came out of the fog as the author. bit.ly/2OYec0a_142

“Two percent African?! I thought, Well, who am I then? ... I was embarrassed... I was afraid people would think I was a fraud. I was so disappointed, and in my heart..., I didn’t believe it... how could I not be black? I’d lived black. I was black.”
