Is Syed criticising Merkel for having a policy, announcing it, or following through? That is what politicians should do. As ever, if decisions are cheque writing, commentary is bookkeeping - with all the neatness and certainty of time and distance from the act.
It is good news that the #AssistedDyingBill was just voted down by 286-270 votes.
Frankly the return of this bill to the House was as ill-judged as the original PMB.
We do not need a new, written constitution.
“Written constitutions are often promoted by people who want to entrench their own political values and prevent them from being abrogated or modified by a future generation which may think differently.”

There are rumours of a new addition to the @britishmuseum’s latest exhibit.
Politicians often confuse temporary stewardship with ‘embodying’ their Office and Dept.
Democracy loses when personal upset trumps institutional function and withdraws the state from the public square.
Did @SStoreyDCMS request a ministerial direction on this?
The planned reintroduction of an unchanged #AssistedDyingBill only confirms the dramatic thinning of UK politics over the last few decades. A politics hollowed out to a calculus of power, process and manoeuvre; increasingly detached from the real priorities of voters.

Absolutely dismayed that the Assisted Dying Bill is being re-introduced. Not a single one of our major medical or professional bodies support it. A deeply flawed and dangerous bill that poses a real risk to the most vulnerable in our society.

The ‘scapegoat’ originates in the #OldTestament (Leviticus 16) where guilt is symbolically transferred onto an innocent goat, which carries it away.
It is both an admission of guilt and requires an innocent ‘goat’.
Removing the Chief of Staff won’t work.
In a strict legal sense the PM’s Chief of Staff is a (very important) member of the PM’s staff. They can’t “resign from government” as the government is made up only of elected members.
In political terms it is a revealing insight into how things have been run.
🚨 IN FULL: Morgan McSweeney’s resignation statement
“After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government.
The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself.
When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice. In public life responsibility must be owned when it matters most, not just when it is most convenient. In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside.
This has not been an easy decision. Much has been written and said about me over the years but my motivations have always been simple: I have worked every day to elect and support a government that puts the lives of ordinary people first and leads us to a better future for our great country. Only a Labour government will do that. I leave with pride in all we have achieved mixed with regret at the circumstances of my departure. But I have always believed there are moments when you must accept your responsibility and step aside for the bigger cause.
As I leave I have two further reflections:
Firstly, and most importantly, we must remember the women and girls whose lives were ruined by Jeffrey Epstein and whose voices went unheard for far too long.
Secondly, while I did not oversee the due diligence and vetting process, I believe that process must now be fundamentally overhauled. This cannot simply be a gesture but a safeguard for the future.
I remain fully supportive of the Prime Minister. He is working every day to rebuild trust, restore standards and serve the country. I will continue to back that mission in whatever way I can. It has been the honour of my life to serve”
Well said, indeed - both of you.
Well said @lucianaberger.
It’s not just that none of these organisations support this Bill. They have also explicitly said that it is not safe, that it will harm vulnerable people.
Why are we not listening to this warning?

Thankful to everyone who stands with us!
The buffer zones now suspend normal rules of evidence. Curtailing silent prayer deprives us all of our freedom of thought, the freedom to move and our privacy in those same spaces. It’s terrible law-making and should be challenged (Art 18 UDHR).

Someone with an excruciating but treatable condition can’t find doctors to perform the surgery - but can access Medically Assisted Dying instead.
