Vapi (@Vapi_AI) is the platform for building and deploying voice AI agents. It now serves about a billion calls a year for companies including Amazon, Uber, and Intuit, helping businesses automate phone calls with AI.
Voice is becoming the default interface between businesses and their customers, but getting agents reliable enough for production is still much harder than it looks.
In this episode of Founder Firesides, co-founders @jordan_dearsley and @nikhilro_ sit down with @gustaf to share the long path to product-market fit, from pivoting more than a dozen times to building an AI therapist that eventually became the foundation for Vapi. They explain why voice was the first idea that felt inevitable, and how sticking with that conviction before the technology was ready eventually paid off.

This one was unexpected...
I was not excited for voice models until I tried this one.
It's VERY realistic, almost spooky.
The coolest part.. the model can search the internet.. fast. And if you've spent any time with GPT-Realtime-2 You know, these voice models are getting very good at using tools. Soon (i'm guessing) you'll be able to do your email, check on business data, schedule meetings, and basically anything... just by chatting with this voice model. The tech is basically already there for Jarvis.
The only thing left is a generative UI layer...
Every essay I've written this past week started as a ChatGPT Voice conversation on my walk home.
I'd tell it: I'm going to brainstorm and dictate an essay. Don't interrupt unless I make a point worth pulling on or say something that needs clarification.
Then I'd talk for 20 minutes. It might chime in five or six times with small things like "yep," "I see," or "good idea." Just enough to feel like someone was listening. It made me much more comfortable thinking out loud.
The best part was that if it started responding and I kept talking, it would go, "oh, sorry, keep going."
When I finished, I'd ask, "hey, what was the thing you wanted to mention?" and we'd pick that thread right back up.
It is one thing to have a cool demo on YouTube, but it's another to enable this for millions of people around the world.
I have already tested this out to talk to other people in different languages, to brainstorm ideas, to teach me new concepts.
At OpenAI, our mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, and I think a model like this is a huge step forward beyond work, for all people, at a scale only we can serve.

GPT-live (next-generation voice) launches today in ChatGPT.
it feels magical and 'real'.
i have always preferred typing to talking to an AI, now i think that's going to shift.

Voice is the new computer interface. It makes technology disappear and creates magical experiences.
To all my coworkers who spent years listening to me talking to my computer. This is it. It’s your turn now.
Introducing GPT-Realtime-2 in the API: our most intelligent voice model yet, bringing GPT-5-class reasoning to voice agents.
Voice agents are now real-time collaborators that can listen, reason, and solve complex problems as conversations unfold.
Now available in the API alongside streaming models GPT-Realtime-Translate and GPT-Realtime-Whisper — a new set of audio capabilities for the next generation of voice interfaces.
Gemini Voice really is a cut above. It’s incredible.
Coming to GBrain and your OpenClaw/Hermes shortly
ChatGPT is now available in CarPlay.
The voice mode you know, now available on-the-go.
Rolling out to iPhone users running iOS 26.4+ where CarPlay is supported.

Today, we're announcing significant new traction in our voice AI research and development partnerships.
Over the past few months, we’ve quietly been expanding our focus on providing frontier voice AI training data to research labs looking to imbue emotion understanding and cutting edge expressivity into their foundation models.
We believe some of the most exciting possibilities for deeper speech and emotion understanding will come to fruition this year. By training today’s frontier models to understand the nuances voice interaction—rife with subtle tones of frustration or satisfaction, “aha” moments, chuckles, sighs, backchannels, and interruptions—we believe that labs will unlock new possibilities for voice AI to become a primary interface within many applications.
In our experience working with leading research labs and AI-first enterprises, a consistent pattern we’ve seen is a greater need for high-quality datasets and evaluation pipelines than for new algorithms or architectures. Researchers spend up to 80% of their time curating the data they need to diagnose model issues, fix failure modes, and improve model behavior.
That’s why Hume is now focused on building the data and evaluation infrastructure needed to train next-generation voice models across industry. With the right training, we hope that deeper voice understanding and empathy can be translated not just into more efficient interfaces but into better alignment of AI with human well-being.
