People were buying food and standing in ordinary lines and someone walked in and blew them apart. The first police count was twenty-three dead and well over a hundred hurt. You can still see the fruit on the ground and the blood in the sand and a bicycle that nobody picked up. Borno has been living like this for seventeen years. Two million people already run from it. The groups change their letterhead. Boko Haram. Islamic State West Africa. The work is the same. Find a crowd that cannot shoot back and turn the street into a statement. Nobody in the West even cares that christians are being slaughtered by these Islamists. There’s no Israel in the frame and no chant that works on a campus, so it stays a short report from a city most of them couldn’t find on a map. The same people who will lecture you about Islamophobia go quiet when the dead are African and the men who did it are not useful to the story they already wrote. That silence is so telling. They don’t hate violence. They hate a certain kind of victim.
