#VirtualEnigma is coming to a browser near you to celebrate Alan Turing's Birthday! That means you've only got to wait until 23rd June 2021. It is fully browser based so no install required & should run on most modern systems. From WW2 to WWW @tnmoc @bletchleypark @threejs_org

“My heart leapt!”
Miss Hester Marguerite Sorel-Cameron, later Dick-Lauder, was a Foreign Office Civilian who worked at Bletchley Park from 1941 to 1944.
Initially based in Hut 6, Hester later moved to Hut 8, where she worked to break codes by comparing messages.
“On one particular occasion I remember doing just that and broke it myself!”
Hester recalled the importance of the work, despite its often laborious nature, and how staff were instructed to describe their jobs simply as working for “a branch of the Foreign Office”.
In 1944, Hester left Bletchley Park to become a driver for the Red Cross in Edinburgh.

I just realised that we got no likes for this video last year on X but it blew up on Youtube even. Sad.
The first time a virtual headset was rendering in XR.
Virtual Fialka M-125 : Wheel transport mechanism. It's complex already & I've only just begun! 3 of 10 rotors in place, you can see how the clever interlaced arrangement of fingers move with each alternate rotor pulled a different direction. @cryptomuseum @tnmoc @bletchleypark
Wow! That's amazing work, love the load of extra detail you've added. The sound effects, light flickering, the reflected light from the screen .. really really impressive!

This modest white cottage at @bletchleypark may be small, but its walls hold a remarkable history...

I was interviewed this week by a reporter from @Nature , one of the world's most prestigious scientific journals, for an article about AI being used to crack historical codes and ciphers. An intersection that is kind of perfectly Elonka-shaped. :)
And the article is out! I'm quoted near the beginning, talking about the flood of AI-generated "solutions" that cryptographers are being asked to evaluate, and mentioned again later about the importance of distinguishing genuine breakthroughs from convincing-looking false positives.
It's a fascinating time for historical cryptanalysis. AI is opening up some remarkable possibilities, but knowing whether you've actually solved something is still a very human challenge.
Delighted to have been included in the conversation!

“I never felt that I had any idea of the bigger picture of things.”
Miss Mary Evans, later Sister St Paul, served in Hut 6, listing incoming Luftwaffe Enigma signals.
Signals were intercepted at stations around the country and sent to Bletchley Park, where Mary and her colleagues worked on the coded material.
“This coded material came into our hut and if we were lucky enough to know the right requirements for the day we could work on these.”
Like many who worked at Bletchley Park, Mary had no idea how significant her work was. Everyone had sworn to keep their work secret.
“I rather think that other people simply thought that we were doing something quite useless like sticking on stamps.”

I've been looking at the Fialka M-125's movement mechanism. A complex interlocked set of fingers are pulled apart. Each finger tracks the pins on the rotor 2 up from itself which allows a tooth to engage (or not) to turn a step. Even & odd rotors turn in opposing directions!

🎙️ New Podcast (E195) - Bed and Board
Where did thousands of Bletchley Park staff live and eat during World War Two?
In this episode, Erica Munro, Head of Content at Bletchley Park Trust, and Research Officer Dr Thomas Cheetham get to grips with the pressures involved in finding bed and board for thousands of staff during a time of national strife.
