I went looking for the evidence that Baroness Longfield had independently selected the places in her rape gang inquiry. I couldn't find it. What I found instead was a pressure trail behind every single place she has named. Bradford was announced SIX HOURS before its council was due to vote demanding inclusion. London wrote to Longfield. SIX DAYS later it was in. Wales was announced FIVE DAYS after the Rhyl rape gang was sentenced before Longfield had even decided which parts of Wales she would investigate. Oldham was already waiting for her when she got the job. And Birmingham? What happened there is extraordinary. Then I looked at Calderdale, Kirklees, Hull, Blackpool and Telford. They asked. They wrote letters. They were thanked. They are still outside. That matters because Longfield has made PUBLIC CONCERN one of the tests for deciding where her inquiry goes.
