Here's another of the truly individual architects of the Victorian age: David Valinsky's "The Architecture and Writings of E.S. Prior: Challenging the Arts and Crafts" does full justice to Prior's unique buildings and inspiring vision. victorianweb.org/art/archite…

A "New Woman" novel of the 1890s that shows how a heroine's acceptance of "traditional womanhood" brings unexpected fulfilment? Sounds contradictory, to say the least! Time to reread Kathleen Mannington Caffyn (Iota)'s "A Yellow Aster"! victorianweb.org/authors/caf…

An unexpected find: a Stephen Adam window in a school in Buenos Aires, in the stairwell. It's a stunning one too, showing the apple harvest. Thanks, Alejandro Vetere, for letting us know, & for some great photos of it! victorianweb.org/art/stained…

So pleased to share Dr Jasmine Allen's "A.W.N. Pugin, Stained Glass, and the 1851 Medieval Court" with an earlier edition of the Pugin Society's journal, "True Principles": it wasn't plain sailing for Pugin, but turned into a real triumph! victorianweb.org/art/stained…

It's hard to spot owls even when you hear them hooting, which may be why Jemima Blackburn explains: “Tawny Owl in this plate was a tame bird” in her book "Birds Drawn from Nature" (1862). Wild or tame, it's magnificent, anyway! victorianweb.org/art/illustr… #birds #painting

Are you ready for the #HarvestMoon? This is Helen Allingham's lovely shimmering watercolour of 1879, "The Harvest Moon, 'globed in yellow splendour.'" Even the weary harvester, returning from the fields scythe in hand, isn't immune to its beauty. victorianweb.org/painting/al…

#autumnequinox: time for the leaves to fall, if they haven't already! This is John #Ruskin's marvellously evocative "Study of a Spray of Dead Oak Leaves," 1879, from Museums Sheffield. You can feel how crisp the leaves are! victorianweb.org/painting/ru…
