Did ankylosaurs use their tail clubs to fight each other? @DavidEvans_ROM, @ExpeditionLive and I share new research in Biology Letters on Zuul crurivastator, showing it had healed osteoderms on its flanks - evidence of battle damage from another Zuul. Art by @Paleoartologist.

ALT Two armoured dinosaurs, members of the species Zuul crurivastator, battle each other in a clearing in a forest on a misty morning. The low angle light highlights their spiky appearance. The Zuul on the left is facing away from us, and has walloped the Zuul on the right with its tail club. The Zuul on the right is facing us, is reeling and off balance from the impact, and pieces of its spikes have broken away.

#2024SVP @ltdickson: Four-toed tracks from Gething inferred to be from a large oviraptorosaur, in which case they would be the oldest record of oviraptorosaur gigantism.

Courtenay’s very own Puntledge River elasmosaur is turning 80,000,036 this month!
Join us at the museum on Saturday, Nov 16 from 11am – 2pm for a special birthday party for the elasmosaur and celebrate its official designation as the provincial fossil.

Emily presented results from her @UVicSEOS MSc research on ankylosaur teeth at #2024SVP today - nice job @e_g_cross!

#2024SVP @e_g_cross: Large size is a good benchmark for identifying teeth of large nodosaurids, and outline analysis can sometimes identify specific ankylosaur clades. But there is substantial overlap, and traditional morphometrics don’t help much.

Last week we announced some exciting results from this summer's fieldwork on the Spatsizi Plateau - we found a bonebed at the top of the mountain we camp under and brought back over 90 bones from multiple species of dinosaurs.

I was able to take a double-sized crew thanks to funding from the Trebek Initiative, and owe huge thanks to Derek Larson, Thomas Cullen, Brady McBride, Teague Dickson, and Emily Cross, plus of course 2019 team member Jaclyn Richmond.

Teeth from a relative of the Tyrannosaurus rex, bones from at least one large herbivore, the foot of a small meat-eater...
Congratulations to two of our graduate students, Emily Cross and @ltdickson on contributing to this amazing discovery!
