Ever tried to make a crypto transaction and thought why you are paying extra? That extra cost is usually called a network fee or gas fee.
Blockchain is like a busy highway, your transaction is a car trying to use the road.
The gas fee is what you pay to get your transaction processed by the network.
But what exactly are you paying for? You're paying for the blockchain's resources.
When you:
• Send crypto
• Swap tokens
• Mint an NFT
• Interact with a DeFi protocol
• Approve a token
• Execute a smart contract
The network has to process and record that activity, and validators or other network participants responsible for processing transactions receive fees according to that blockchain's design.
Here's where it gets interesting, not every transaction costs the same, sending a simple token transfer can require fewer resources than interacting with a complicated smart contract and when the network becomes congested, fees can increase.
It's basically, more demand for block space and more competition to get transactions processed, this is why you might pay a tiny fee at one moment and see a much higher fee later.
𝐆𝐚𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐯𝐬 𝐆𝐚𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞
These two are often confused.
• Gas limit: The maximum amount of computational work you're allowing the transaction to use.
• Gas price: How much you're willing to pay per unit of that computational work.
Your final fee depends on the blockchain's fee mechanism and the resources your transaction consumes.
Different chains handle this differently, so don't assume every blockchain works exactly like Ethereum.

A gas fee is NOT the same thing as a transaction fee charged by an exchange.
If you're withdrawing crypto from a centralized exchange, the exchange may charge its own withdrawal fee.
If you're interacting directly with a blockchain, you're dealing with the network's fee mechanism.
Understanding that difference can save you a lot of confusion.
