A couple reflections on the quantum computing breakthrough we just announced...
Most of us grew up learning there are three main types of matter that matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Today, that changed.
After a nearly 20 year pursuit, we’ve created an entirely new state of matter, unlocked by a new class of materials, topoconductors, that enable a fundamental leap in computing.
It powers Majorana 1, the first quantum processing unit built on a topological core.
We believe this breakthrough will allow us to create a truly meaningful quantum computer not in decades, as some have predicted, but in years.
The qubits created with topoconductors are faster, more reliable, and smaller.
They are 1/100th of a millimeter, meaning we now have a clear path to a million-qubit processor.
Imagine a chip that can fit in the palm of your hand yet is capable of solving problems that even all the computers on Earth today combined could not!
Sometimes researchers have to work on things for decades to make progress possible.
It takes patience and persistence to have big impact in the world.
And I am glad we get the opportunity to do just that at Microsoft.
This is our focus: When productivity rises, economies grow faster, benefiting every sector and every corner of the globe.
It’s not about hyping tech; it’s about building technology that truly serves the world.

Microsoft's supporting paper, published in Nature, does not support the claim that they have created a topological qubit. nature.com/articles/s4158…
Peer reviewers of the Nature paper expressed concern that the paper misleadingly implies that a topological qubit was demonstrated or otherwise achieved: static-content.springer.com/esm/art%3A10.1…

Donald Trump picks Elizabeth Holmes to oversee the Office of Science and Technology
This is insane. A wild mix of good, bad, and drama is sure to come of it. And hopefully a balanced budget.

Political violence is an assault on democracy itself and must be condemned without conditions. It represents a loosening of the social contract and unleashes the worst elements. Attempts to rationalize or score points fan the flames. Beware of those who try.

I sincerely hope when Trump speaks he preaches that violence is for cowards and to bang home how unacceptable violence is on either side of the aisle. Take the temperature in this country down. It would be the most presidential thing anybody had done in a long time.

I politically identify as center left. While I vehemently disagree with much of what President Trump represents--I am grateful that he escaped with what appears to be minor wounds, and I wish he recovers fully. No one deserves a violent end, in politics or in any other facet of life.
Reflecting on today, my dear hope is that this moment is a wake up call for our country to unify around the notion that we need to learn to disagree peacefully. There is nothing wrong with passionate disagreement around ideas. It's really what makes our country special, in that we have such a long history of debating our ideas in peace.
Please, let this not be the start of a new phase of violence as a norm in US politics. Instead, let today be a reminder that we should all condemn violence, and that politics should be conducted as a matter of civil discourse and peaceful action.
Despite everything I hope for above--I'm really sad right now, and I've never been more skeptical. Hopefully tomorrow brings more optimism.
Can we unify against violence and extremism, in support of the democratic process?
With how divided the US has felt during my lifetime, it's amazing this is the first assassination attempt I've witnessed. Hopefully the US (and our media) can find better unity for our future.
