C.S. Lewis, a Protestant to the end, wrote months before he died: “I believe in Purgatory.” He pictured a soul reaching heaven filthy, and God offering to let it in as it is. The soul asks to be cleaned first. “It may hurt, you know,” God warns. “Even so, sir.”

I thought this was Patrick Clancy. Physiognomy checks out.
A Texas man accused of killing his pregnant wife cut off his ankle monitor, hopped on a bicycle, and boarded a private jet to Italy before his murder trial — and now the Italian government is dictating the terms of his return. Italy granted Lee Gilley's extradition only after U.S. prosecutors agreed to drop the capital murder charge tied to the death of his unborn child. No death penalty. No life without parole. The reduced first-degree murder charge carries 5 to 99 years if convicted. Gilley's defense attorney says an appeal is likely, meaning the man accused of murdering Christa Bauer Gilley could remain overseas even longer. Authorities believe he had help fleeing the country. If, as a woman, you can’t find bald men attractive, you’re probably not heterosexual.
Single ladies: now is a great time to lock in a guy with a bad hairline.

This is some of my favorite church history; people weren’t sure what kind of serpentine monster the beast foretold in Revelations might look like, so they stuffed the closest deemed primordial-seeming estimate here on earth and hung it from their naves for apotropaic effect:)
Seeing The Devils reminded me of how stuffed crocodiles were sometimes hung from the ceilings of churches to symbolize dragons. This seems to have been a 15th-16th century trend.

I became lost in my work (this hospital has like 5 buildings and I need to try to find the singular coffeeshop kiosk that hasn’t closed yet)

I’m wrapping up my dissertation analyses and it’s kinda just crazy how much I’ve learned in the past 6 years. Like I can fully work in command line now, submit jobs to HPC clusters that seamlessly iterate across tens of files gigabytes large, and troubleshoot said scripts.

I mean I hold an unfortunately high bar for myself always, so I did fully expect these things of myself, but so few people in my field do this critical work toward biological systems integration and I’m so excited to say I’m one of them.

What distinguishes the 1% from the merely affluent? How about having a third child. New post on a topic I've long been fascinated by (the economics and financing of having a third kid) where I finally felt bold enough to go into the latest SCF microdata to get a good answer. /1

Boomer wealth is going to be extracted from them entirely by the healthcare industry and their families will get nothing.
My coworker's mother passed away last November. She left her modest $190,000 house to him clear and free, no mortgage, completely paid off after thirty years of factory work. He moved into the home in January to finally settle the estate. Two weeks ago, a letter arrived from the state Medicaid estate recovery office. Because his mother spent four months in a rehabilitation facility before she passed, the state quietly slapped a retroactive $114,000 lien against the property title. He called the state health department, frantic, asking how a hospital stay could bankrupt an inherited home that had no mortgage balance. The caseworker sighed and told him: "Federal law requires state programs to claw back healthcare costs from deceased estates. The house cannot be sold or transferred until the balance is cleared in full." He offered to pay a monthly settlement. They said no. The full $114,000 is due in 60 days, or they foreclose on the property at a public auction. A lifetime of working-class savings, wiped out overnight by a retroactive healthcare lien. You don't own generational wealth. You're just holding a property title until the state finds a legal mechanism to repossess it the moment you die.
