Follow the money. It gets interesting when you see how the nonprofit world works.
The Immigrant Welcome Center reports $96,786 in government grants and another $718,662 in other contributions, gifts and grants.
But that’s only one piece of the puzzle.
The organization also receives funding from major players like Lilly, IU Health, and the Indianapolis Foundation, each with its own funding sources, grant programs, and network of nonprofit partners.
Here’s how the nonprofit money machine works:
Taxpayer dollars ➡️Government grants ➡️Nonprofits ➡️ Foundation funding ➡️ Partner organizations ➡️ More grants.
Money moves. Organizations overlap. Funding gets mixed.
And here’s the kicker: nonprofits generally aren’t required to publicly identify every individual donor. Their tax filings can disclose certain major contributors to the IRS, but the public versions generally redact donor names.
Sound familiar? It creates a transparency gap that can look a lot like the problem with dark money groups.

@IndyMayorJoe appointed Margarette Webb as his replacement, and the City-County Council’s Administration and Finance Committee considered her appointment tonight.
During the debate, @IndyGOP’s Brian Mowery questioned why Indianapolis needs a standalone DEI office when these functions could be handled by HR or individual departments.
Mowery is right. Why are taxpayers paying for a separate office to do work existing departments should already be doing?

Linton News Investigative Reporter confronts Sullivan Mayor JD Wilson over a nearly month-long delay in fulfilling a public records request regarding communications with Indiana-Michigan Power.
Mayor Wilson insisted that we come in person to fill out a paper form as opposed to just fulfilling the records request via email.
The request specifically targets whether the mayor received emails or texts about gifts or tickets to a Colts game suite, which the company offered to elected officials to discuss bringing a nuclear power plant to Sullivan.
While Mayor Wilson initially denied any knowledge of this, he now admits to finding an email from the company about the offer.
However, he repeatedly dodges direct questions regarding whether he actually accepted the tickets before the event was canceled, leaving citizens without clear answers as to whether he just found the email or had known about and accepted the offer from the beginning.
This is Matt Gentry level of behavior.

A Fort Wayne student is suing Fort Wayne Community Schools, its leaders and her former principal, alleging they failed to protect her from a fellow student accused of sexual assault.
The student, De’mykal Lockett, 17, faces TWO felony rape charges. His jury trial is scheduled for April 20.
The lawsuit alleges school officials knew of a history of sexual misconduct but failed to take appropriate action.
Former North Side Principal David West was fired after a pattern of concerns involving school culture and failure to address staff harassment allegations.

Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia... and Washington D.C.
The Department of Energy just issued an emergency order to PJM, the grid that powers 65 MILLION people... running Oct 13 through Oct 16.
Continued HOT temperatures are straining the grid... so power plants are now allowed to run PAST their pollution limits just to keep the lights on...
And as a LAST RESORT before rolling blackouts... PJM can force data centers and other big power users off the grid and onto their backup generators.
The grid could have as little as ~900 MW of cushion left...
