How does a cell remodel the ER membrane into a lipid droplet?
Excited to share our new preprint. We find that regulated opening of the seipin ring defines a functional ER–lipid droplet interface — and identify SMLR1 as a regulator of this transition.

Amazing!
A long-standing mystery in cholesterol biology: why is ER cholesterol sensing so switch-like rather than gradual? Our answer: cholesteryl ester phase separation in the ER, which converts small lipid changes into a cooperative transcriptional response.

Fantastic to see my favorite protein on cover of Science!
Fat storage in the body relies on specialized structures called lipid droplets. In a new Science study, researchers identified the microprotein adipogenin as a regulator of adipocyte lipid droplet size, revealing a key mechanism in lipid homeostasis.
Learn more in this week's issue: scim.ag/47FPKoj

ALT Lipid droplet growth is orchestrated by the seipin complex, which provides a structural platform for droplet nucleation and expansion. The microprotein adipogenin fine-tunes seipin’s conformation, remodeling its architecture to regulate lipid storage capacity. This modulation results in the formation of fewer but larger lipid droplets, revealing a key mechanism in lipid homeostasis.
Fantastic work from Rasmus finally online!

Short piece on my favorite protein!
Can you hold a soap bubble without releasing it from the bubble blower ring?
Seipin, the favourite protein of Veijo Salo, PostDoc at EMBL Heidelberg, can! Its bubbles are made of fat, which is thus stored for later use.
