Toronto Zoo just welcomed a tiny endangered pygmy hippo… and she was already on her feet within minutes. Born early Sunday morning to 20-year-old mom Kindia, the female calf is her third. Staff watched her try to stand within about 15 minutes of birth. A few hours later she was already moving around the space with surprising confidence and nursing by the afternoon. Pygmy hippos are listed as endangered. Only a couple thousand are believed left in the wild, mostly because their forest and swamp homes keep shrinking. Every successful birth in an accredited zoo matters for the long-term survival of the species. For now the little one is staying behind the scenes with her mom so they can bond without stress. The public will get to meet her later.
