Brilliant discussion by @BorisDralyuk of the “whole project” of approaching poetic translation - plus a recording of a Julia Nemirovskaya poem in Russian & English! Looking forward to the whole series of reflections on translation, thx @AmitMajmudar!
This summer the great @AmitMajmudar approached a number of accomplished poet-translators (mistakenly including me) to reflect on particularly tricky challenges. I’m grateful to him and @MarginaliaROB for this opportunity to share a Julia Nemirovskaya poem. Read the piece below!

My thanks to @Othuke__Umukoro for inspiring me to dive into the spiky, salty, shrewd satirical poems of @TabanloLiyong. So much to savor in this African giant’s flavorsome quarreling in and with English. Chew on this sermon from the 1990s. (I love his promotion of Col. Sanders.)

I was explaining to my Ukrainian colleague the phrase ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’. She told me the equivalent in Ukrainian is ‘The only free cheese is in the mousetrap’ - which is so much better

Ronald L. Fair’s Hog Butcher is a gripping, poetic novel about a young Black boy shot by police—and the two children who must decide whether to tell the truth.

An American citizen who was killed in a Russian attack on Kyiv this week was an artist from Oregon, Fred Grandy. Upset by a reversal of US policy on Ukraine, he came to Kyiv in May to help clean up rubble from Russian attacks. He was among the 28 people killed on June 17.

Born, like me, in Odesa, the poet William Pillin (1909-85) was raised in Cleveland and Chicago, and spent the last decades of his life in LA. He wrote beautifully about the city, often with great humor, but it is this poem from a 1954 issue of @poetrymagazine I want to share.
