I had a lovely medical student sit in with me this week.
At the end of the clinic she said, 'Thanks Dr Busby, and by the way, you're amazing with patients.'
My intention was not to just teach her gynaecology, but to demonstrate how important the doctor-patient relationship is. To teach her to listen to patients, explain things clearly in terms that they understand and to empower them to make decisions about their care.
She saw the difference it makes as it results in a trusting partnership with the patient's best interests at the heart of that relationship.
