Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 105 are expected across the forecast area today with highest temperatures in the Champlain Valley. Some precautions you can take: drink plenty of fluids, move to a cooling shelter, check up on relatives and neighbors.

ALT A graphic showing two maps, both of northern New York and Vermont. The one on the left shows the forecast maximum heat index values for today, up to 105 degrees. The right map shows where Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are in effect today. Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect for the Champlain Valley, and Heat Advisories are in effect mostly elsewhere across the forecast area.

Today is Go Orange Day, an annual part of National Work Zone Awareness Week. On this day each year, we wear orange to remind everyone to slow down and pay attention when driving through work zones to ensure the safety of the people who work to repair and improve our highways.

With heavy rain expected, Vermonters and visitors should stay vigilant over the next two days. Watch the weather. Follow @vemvt. And register for Vermont Alert (vtalert.gov) for up-to-date weather forecasts and alerts.
Watch the weather closely today, especially if you live in a flood-prone area. Plan your route to higher ground now, and never drive or walk through floodwaters. vem.vermont.gov/preparedness…

Good advice from the National Weather Service. There's no telling exactly where the heaviest rain will fall, so be ready. VEM has preparedness resources in multiple languages on our website: vem.vermont.gov/preparedness.
