Can we convince the surgical Royal Colleges or the surgical associations that XR surgical training is the future, maybe? We have more importantly convinced the next generation of surgeons. The VRiMS medical student surgical societies group has Manchester, UCLAN, Lincoln, Buckinghamshire, KCL, Exeter, Sheffield, BSMS and St George’s already signed up.

A simple idea executed so wonderfully by the project lead Dr Jonathan Fenn in collaboration with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, informed by the fire safety officer Paul O’Donnell from @qvh and developed by @Cineon_Prod. This is a powerful image for XR in healthcare. It’s shows collaboration with @VRIMS_Lab, @NHSEngland, Sussex Fire Brigade, @qvh and Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Why is this important for XR in healthcare? Because we have built a VR multiuser simulation using interactive 360 video and 6DOF for fire safety mandatory training for 1.3million NHS workers. This opens the door to XR for the entire NHS. – at South East, England

Surgery is more then just surgery, the theatre of theatre includes patient set up, surgeon set up, how to use your assistant, how to manage equipment failure, how to develop techniques in training your triainees, only 5% of microvascular surgery, for example, is the anastamosis itself. Pedicle position, sequencing of vessels, microscope and patient setup etc etc. So it isnt just haptics but equally this is important. What XR will allow is remote learning for a fraction of cost of simulation but importantly it opens the door for training where there is little or no opportunity in low to middle income countries.
