More than 35 metres lower in places. This is the Rhône Glacier🇨🇭 between the 2019 and 2024 terrain editions.
Across the glacier outline used here, the surface is 13.8 m lower on average.
Built from swisstopo terrain and aerial photos, rendered in forge3d. The flight switches from 2019 to 2024, then blue shows the elevation difference on a fixed scale.
For this Rhône Glacier comparison, I used the new data-preparation features coming in forge3d 1.45.0 for Python:
→ Terrain, aerial photos and land cover aligned on one shared grid.
→ Reusable recipes: swap datasets, keep the camera, styles and checks.
→ Source tiles pinned by hash, saved scenes reused without reopening the originals.
→ Export both years as editable Unreal Landscapes, with heightmaps and paintable land-cover layers.

The plot thickens. The RONI enso 3.4 record is 2.4 in back-to-back 3-month periods in the dead of winter in 82-83. Bias-corrected says this is peaking now. Since Sept was 1.7 and Oct may be around 2.4, Nov 2.2, not only will it fall short, but it will peak earliest on record . That is a different beast from a record, peaking in winter. Latest RONI is 2.4, unchanged while 4 has fallen Also this may be the biggest west-east difference on records. All this likely means this isn't your standard broad-brush strong event, and it helps explain why the euro is doing what it's doing in the longer term.
