#PlayStation has been fumbling HARD on multiple fronts lately. • Ending physical discs • Simultaneously no improvements to digital rights or refund policies • Ending Kojima Physint partnership • Losing Kojima to Xbox • Bluepoint Games shuttered • Destiny 2 ended • No Destiny 3 in the works • Instead focusing on Marathon • State of Play starts with movie scene • Bend Studio's GAAS cancelled • Bluepoint's God of War GAAS cancelled • Buying Bungie for a whopping $3.6bn (inc retention schemes) • Bungie multiple titles cancelled • Firesprite's Twisted Metal GAAS cancelled • Firewalk's Concord released and cancelled • Insomniac's Spider-Man: The Great Web cancelled • Deviation Games's MP game cancelled • London Studio's AAA New IP Fantasy MP game cancelled • Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Factions Online cancelled • Factions also delays Intergalactic release • Loses Square Enix exclusivity • Longterm investing into projects like Horizon Hunters Gatherering and Fairgame$ • Horizon Hunters Gatherering rebooted after years of development • Multiple newly founded or acquired studios that never released a game shuttered • Amoug them Manchester Studio, Neon Koi and Dark Outlaw Games • Huge price hikes (albeit impacted by macro-economics and AI shortages) • Releases PS5 Pro without disc drive model, then doesn't produce enough drive attachments leading to huge resale mark ups • VR2 post support wanes • Releases a $200 pro controller with poor battery life • No recent PlayStation Showcases • Lower first party release cadence • Executives openly talking about monetizing existing users more • And so on I won't pretend like they haven't been releasing great games (Astro Bot, Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, SAROS, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls etc), and don't have an incredible looking up coming line up. Nor that there haven't been pro consumer moves with free content or DLC like Yotei Legends, SAROS Zenith, God of War Valhalla, years of GT7 content etc. But so much else has been a royal shit show, especially with live service and studio/IP management, and ending physical games. All I can say is PlayStation management and executives are lucky they have such talented existing studios, and that their biggest competitor fumbled this gen so incredibly hard, otherwise I really think their marketshare could've been eroded into this gen. And who knows, maybe it still will next-gen.
