In less than 10 seconds, it’s possible to teach a child how to properly hold a pencil!
Lack of instruction can lead to bad habits forming that take years to undo. Furthermore, poor pencil grip often results in:
✏️ Poor legibility
✏️ Hand fatigue
✏️ Slower written output
✏️ Frustration
✏️ Need for interventions
So what do you do? Check out this quick demo to see how easy it is to teach students how to hold a pencil and reduce risk of future handwriting difficulties!! youtube.com/shorts/xFREKPnGR…

Tell school board members to make sure the materials they adopt have proof of working, before they adopt them.
Normalize that.

I swear to you. No teacher is holding back their "super-secret" teacher secrets to keep kids from reading. Training, materials, and leadership have to improve.
When you know how to teach a kid to read, you'll change schools before you hide it under a bushel.

A teacher's love for students is insufficient.
Our love must be welded with high expectations and effective teaching grounded in the science of learning.

Teaching writing is hard.
Most teacher preparation programs do a poor job of equipping teachers to teach writing to novice writers, just as they have struggled to prepare teachers to teach reading.
The hard truth is that while we have begun to address the reading instructional crisis in this country, the writing crisis has largely been ignored. Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin, so we must give writing the same level of focus and priority as reading.
Showing students a finished writing product is not the same as teaching them how to write. Talking about writing is also not the same as teaching writing. Novice writers need the same kind of explicit, systematic instruction that they receive in reading.
To become fluent writers, students need teacher modeling, guided practice, and independent practice in writing, and it all starts at the sentence level.

Replying to @natwexler
@natwexler reminds us in her latest Substack that real progress comes when teachers have both cognitive science and high-quality instructional materials grounded in that science.
Strong science + strong curriculum = stronger learning.

Some reasons why writing is superior to typing:
-Handwriting is a form of neurocognitive training. You’re not only practising a motor skill. You’re shaping the brain networks that integrate vision, movement, and language which is closely tied to learning and memory.
-When taking notes by hand/writing learners aren’t just recording information but are building integrated networks that support recall and transfer.
