In a recent exchange with @VDMAonline (German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association), we discussed the future of economic relations between #Europe and #China, as well as the association’s new position paper on China. With an export ratio of around 84 percent, the mechanical and plant engineering sector is one of Europe’s most internationally oriented industries. This makes fair competition and reliable framework conditions all the more crucial for companies in the sector. Our discussion focused on VDMA’s proposals for how Europe can respond to increasing distortions of competition. These include: • imposing countervailing duties on product groups rather than individual companies, • examining the possibility of reversing the burden of proof in anti-subsidy investigations, • refraining from blanket safeguard measures such as import quotas, • using customs revenues to promote innovation and support affected companies, • ensuring greater reciprocity in access to public procurement, and • strengthening market surveillance of non-compliant machinery from third countries. As Chair of the @Europarl_EN Delegation for Relations with the People’s Republic of China, dialogue with industry is particularly important to me. Especially in times of geopolitical tension, Europe needs to maintain close dialogue with its companies. VDMA’s proposals provide valuable input for the debate on how we can strengthen competitiveness, ensure fair competition, and preserve open markets at the same time. Thank you for the open and constructive discussion.

"The EU must not extend #CBAM any further, as this would force machinery companies to relocate their production outside Europe", says VDMA Executive Director Thilo Brodtmann regarding today´s meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council. More 👇 vdma.eu/de/viewer/-/v2articl…

As CBAM moves into its decisive phase, its design risks undermining Europe’s machinery industry. Companies are penalised for missing data that lies outside their control. [Promoted Content]

Very constructive discussion with Ursula von der Leyen on the challenges currently facing European businesses.
Good discussion with @BusinessEurope We share the same sense of urgency. And the same conviction that the profound changes reshaping the world are an opportunity to build a stronger, more independent Europe. We discussed Europe’s competitiveness strategy and what it will take to deliver it. Success requires everyone on board, and especially European industry and businesses. I outlined the main pillars: Simpler rules - for everyone. More resilient supply chains, built through a network of trusted partners. A deeper Single Market: – where innovative startups can grow and scale across borders – where they can tap into a fully fledged capital market – and where they can access affordable energy A continent that puts AI first And a continent that believes in science, innovation, and the talent of its people, equipped with the right skills
