Pope Leo XIV is back in St. Peter’s Square, smiling, waving and blessing babies just eight days after undergoing surgery for lung cancer.
The 71-year-old pontiff rides through cheering crowds in the popemobile before thanking the faithful for their prayers during his recovery.
"The first thing I want to say to you is thank you for the support and prayers," Leo tells the crowd.
Doctors say the cancer was caught early, offering an encouraging outlook as the pope gradually returns to his duties.

In his words to pilgrims the Pope spoke of his experience in hospital, saying:

ICYMI: Pope Leo XIV’s older brother, Louis Prevost, discussed the pontiff’s reported lung cancer and shares an update on his condition following surgery to @RobFinnertyUSA
He said he spoke to the Pope before he went into the surgery but hasn’t spoken to him directly following the news of his diagnosis:
“It was quite a shock especially from my younger brother, my youngest brother because I’m undergoing cancer treatment myself..to hear that he had that nodule on his lung it was kind of nerve-wracking, shaky…but speaking to him, you know that’s when he told me..well I said, was it life-threatening, 'no', does it seem serious, 'no, they think it's early enough it's small it should be relatively easy surgery'…so we were all in high-hopes and high spirits hoping for the best.
"It sounds like it’s mostly good news", he says. Lou has a type of blood cancer and is being treated in Tampa.
