Practice I designed to stretch individuals ability to receive on 1/2 turn & progress the ball - & a teams ability to progress the ball diagonally.
- 5v5 + 2 with 2 ways to score.
- 8 Passes (to encourage opponents press)
- Receive & play to the diagonal quadrant (primary focus)

A beauty and danger of this Raphinha's play lays in a simplicity here - with on and off, change of rhythm and direction he takes the advantage from the defender's front-step.

Bayern Munich does something fundamentally different: The Diagonal Ladder. 🪜
Bayern Munich's recent structural approach presents a far more central, intricate solution.

Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona goes far beyond structure. Their main feature is spatial capacity and the interconnection between players.🧠🎥

Barcelona started the season at full throttle, largely due to the synergy between players and their ability to combine.🔴🔵

How Brighton utilize their central defenders during build-up situations🧩

I think seeing the go-to solution for outplaying man-to-man as '1v1s' is reductive.
Sure, it's significant, but Gasperini's worst records are against Inzaghi and Conte.
I know they coached strong teams, but neither is known for leveraging dribbling.

I just went back and watched every Brighton passing sequence and attacking move against us, and honestly, they knew exactly what they were doing.
They understood that trying to penetrate our defence every single time wouldn’t work, so they had a contingency plan: shoot from outside the box and make every attempt count.
They clearly did their homework on Raya too. Almost every shot was aimed as far to the left or right as possible, making it difficult for him to get across in time. The execution was ridiculous.
For me, the only way Arsenal could have matched that game was by matching their intensity.
After we conceded the first goal, we should have gone full PSG mode with the kickoff. Play the ball straight into a throw in deep in their half, push the same six or seven players they sent into our half up the pitch, and press the life out of them.
If Brighton wanted to make our build up uncomfortable, we should have made their own build up uncomfortable too.
Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

After Brighton's press fell off ~16th minute; Arsenal got back into the game.
- Overloading to find players in behind
- Playing in behind early
- High regains
- 3rd man runs in behind
Execution & final actions needs to be better during transition.

Look how the 6s/MFs are always timing their movements to provide immediate inside support to FBs (or any player in a wide area) as soon as they receive it.
And the wide receivers are always looking to play inside to find those connections.
Aligned perceptions, shared intentions.

Goal Kicks with forward runs from deeper positions to get free
“There are two kinds of coaches,” Guardiola said, paraphrasing Juanma Lillo, “those who begin their attack from their own penalty box and those who begin it when their rivals take their goal kick.” (page. 50 from 'ball, jeddavies.com)
