Great visit to Baildon Hall (now a social club) on Saturday. A largely C17 stone house with C19 alterations, incorporating a C15 timber-framed wing. An earlier screens passage still survives inside.

Huge thanks to @SVBWG for organising and hosting a superb VAG Spring Conference! We saw an excellent variety of Scottish buildings ranging from castles to longhouses and enjoyed every minute.

Culross - what a wonderful place to visit on the final day of the VAG Spring Conference. Vernacular surprises around every corner (even on a rainy day)!

Final day of the VAG Spring Conference and it was great to start the day with a visit to the fabulous Bannockburn House to see its remarkable plasterwork and other features. Thanks for the tour, @BannockburnHSE!

Moirlanich Longhouse, near Killin, visited during VAG Spring Conference. Lovely example of a cruck-framed cottage with byre, with 'hingin lum' (hanging chimney) and box beds. National Trust for Scotland - well worth a visit!

A castle, a long house, a tin tabernacle and a historic library and chapel - a wonderful variety of buildings for day two of the VAG Spring Conference in Stirling!

Trustees met this evening as plans continue for Clayton Hall's Grand Reopening. A few finishing touches are still underway, but we're excited to welcome visitors soon. We're also gathering memories, stories and photos for future projects. Watch this space!

The rather lovely venue for this year's VAG Spring Conference - Stirling University. About to kick off with an introductory talk on 'Living in a cold, wet climate: environment, materials and vernacular buildings in Scotland'. Very appropriate as we had a heavy shower earlier!

Wales is great for buildings archaeology: early vernacular architecture specialists like Lord Raglan, St Fagans museum (📸) & very accurate listing entries... but there are currently no Welsh dates on The Buildings Archaeologist book tour 🥲 Anyone know some events organisers?

Spent much of this week on an archaeological survey of a Nottinghamshire mediaeval hall house built from trees felled in 1497 and 1500. It is one of those properties that looks entirely Victorian from the exterior but gives up its secrets the moment you step over the threshold...

I'm really looking forward to talking folklore at this online event on 2 April. I've found an understanding of folk tradition hugely enriches the study of ancient buildings because it informs us about how people thought about them. Bookings here: eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-folkl…

Keen garderobe-gogglers may be interested to learn that I've spent part of today writing a good chunky section on latrines for The Buildings Archaeologist book, including this reconstructed one in the parlour chamber of Bayleaf (now at the Weald & Downland Living Museum).
