Good can be very, very simple. A wall with three holes. The deep window & door reveals, the load-bearing brick walls, the generous & large windows, the sash windows, all elevate the simple into the delightful. Needless to say recent malign changes in British building regulations would make this much harder to build today. You can ….

Martin Lewis has asked the public for simple, inexpensive and broadly uncontroversial changes that could make Britain work a little better. What better place to start than with putting an end to street scars? We can hold utility companies to account for scarring our streets with just a few changes to legislation that will: 🚧Make them put pavements back exactly as they found them and increase the fines for failing to do so. 🚧Require them to pay the full cost of restoring damaged pavements to the original standard. Find out more...
Please submit your small ideas for fixing Britain to the Small-Ideas.org website. It’s a new charitable initiative I’ve set up to try and make sure life’s potholes don’t get ignored. Working with two charities and a cross party panel to turn your ideas into policy then try and make it happen. Please share.

Something you won't notice is that the middle roundel here (Stationers' Hall, London) is actually a ventilation grate. This sort of thing was standard practice in the nineteenth century, smoothly integrating proto-modern services with very little aesthetic damage.

Its almost incomprehensible in 1991 there was a dual carriageway running through the middle of Queens square, a stunning complete Georgian square, in Bristol A staggering lack of emotion and sense of reason. Hopefully a blip of insanity in human history

Coventry is rethinking how Britain builds tram infrastructure. Its new track system is faster to install, cheaper to construct and designed to avoid costly utility diversions. Coventry’s light rail innovation could provide a practical blueprint for delivering better public transport across English cities. This is precisely the sort of uncontroversial & normally locally popular urban intensification & infill that should be preapproved and supported by right. The new English NPPF is supportive, but there’s a huge opportunity for councils to turbo charge this. Do pls get in touch if you’d like us to help. The cost versus benefit payback in an era of high housing targets is superb.
New homes don't need to come in towering skyscrapers to be scalable. 2025 → 2026

Notice how much better and more family friendly this new hamburg design is. With stairs serving floors with 2 three bedroom units. So rather than double loaded corridors connecting your one-sided unit to hundreds of other one-sided unit, you can have a dual-aspect 3BD that shares a staircase with 10-12 other households
Design for courtyard housing in Hamburg There’s no long central corridor. Instead 12 stairs and elevators provide access, meaning most apartments have views both into the courtyard *and* onto the street. Image on the right is the roof garden!
