According to my anecdotal research, one simple explanation for this (and similar spending in Chicago and LA, without great outcomes) is in part: Our schools do social work. That staff to student ratio has grown in all of those districts, but the average class size has also grown. Meaning, those new staff are often administrators, special educators, counselors, and social workers. In big cities, we've heavily defunded our social safety net, and pushed the work onto schools.
Because of the Nikole Hannah-Jones story from yesterday, people noticed that New York spends more than $40,000 per student. I was curious about the cost disease behind this. Answer: for decades spending has grown +2.2% per year above inflation for multiple reasons. (1/4)

As per usual, if you ask young people to reflect seriously about their experiences in schools, what they share will be heartfelt (sometimes heart wrenching), insightful, and crucial to navigating the challenges of school change.

The lads continue to admire China Miéville’s genius premise for this novel, but will the second half of the book escape the issues we’ve seen in the noir and noir-adjacent works the UMBers have read? As Inspector Borlu closes in on the answer to this spiraling whodunit, the boys discuss the choices Miéville makes and whether or not they are to our taste.

Crossover! We join forces with @FindingFavsPod to talk M3gan and other stories of robot friends and enemies. Since we don’t yet have actual robot friends (although according to Silicon Valley, they’ll be here soon) what are we really talking about when we tell stories about robots? Loyal servants? Monsters? Children? We discuss examples of each, and contemplate what makes a good story with robots.

Of all the Jesse Dukes's in the world, our dude is the Jesse Dukesiest.
In 2005, if you told me that I'd be in a cozy Yonkers apartment, ironing a shirt, and making slides to illustrate a hilarious AI hallucination involving a giant bronze beaver, to present to a bunch of parents and teachers in Westchester Co, I'd have said "That sounds about right."
