Read Luke 14:12 ("thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen") and Luke 21:16 ("parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends"). Luke puts adelphoi and syngeneis side by side as distinct categories, so he had a word for relatives and did not use it for Jesus' brethren.
