The social media ban for under-16s is Digital ID via the back door (obviously). The Government has a terrible track record for safeguarding children against harm. Their first attempt to push it was, "Digital ID will stop illegal immigration."..... No serious person fell for that. Then it became, "Digital ID will save you the hassle of looking for physical documents in your drawers and cupboards at home.".....Laughably, nobody bought that either. But now it's, "We need age verification to protect children online" (which is far more difficult to argue against). It's also quite a good, albeit nefarious, plan from the usually unimaginative tyrants. However, in Australia, the vast majority of under-16s are still using social media despite the ban, so that won't safeguard children at all. Protecting children online starts with parenting, not by delegating parental responsibility to the state.
