Our youngest playtester this weekend was the son of one of our KS backers…
This was his very first experience with a keyboard and PC gaming. He’s 6, so he’s still building confidence with reading and needed a few hints here and there, but he eagerly played the whole demo level and asked his Dad if they could get a floppy drive to play more at home.
It’s always been our goal to make classic games that reach both older and newer generations of gamers. Live playtesting at an event like this allows us see how the game is connecting with players of all ages. It’s a thrill to see it turning out exactly the way we envisioned.

The last question on our playtester survey was “After what you played today, how much would you want to keep playing?”
Here’s a few of the responses:👇🏻

We are back home safe now at SDG studios. It was great to meet so many passionate creators, fans of Unknown Realm, and good friends.
We ran live playtesting for 10 hours over the course of two days with players of all ages. We got some useful feedback that I look forward to implementing.
We'll post a more detailed recap soon. Thank you to everyone who came to meet us and play our game! ⚔️

💾New on our website - I just posted one of the first interviews we did about Unknown Realm after our Kickstarter.
Highlights:
- @StirringDragon leading the charge for true single-player RPGs vs. controlled party
- Designing within the constraints of the C64
- thoughts about crowdfunding, making indie games, and why Steam should make the Steam Direct fee $1000
This was originally posted in 2017, and it's fun to read now because I can see how we've been consistently dedicated to the vision, despite everything that's been thrown in our path along the way.

You're right, the angle appeared to distort them a bit, but they are standard 3.5" PC floppies. 🙂

Last year at PRGE we talked about why old school RPGs still rule - this year we put together a panel with three other game designers for a conversation about Storytelling and Design Secrets from Tabletop to CRPGs.
If you're an RPG dev or fan mark your calendar for Oct. 9th-11th. You won't want to miss it!
What makes old-school RPGs like Ultima and The Bard's Tale so much fun? Here is the panel recording from @StirringDragon about retro RPG play mechanics and design principles: youtu.be/RA8urOpUt4w

⚔️ 1000 Days In the Life Of A Solo Indie Dev ⚔️
Here are all my game builds from the last 1000 days working on Unknown Realm. (build numbers reset once before when we hit 10k)
📊Stats:
- Average 4 full builds per day (Not counting incremental builds which don't get archived)
- 12,000+ man hours (I work avg 10-12 hrs per day on the game)
People can't even begin to understand how much time, effort, and passion goes into an indie game like this.
