Think about this: When UN agencies finish confirming the August data, they will announce that some 4,000 Ukrainian children have been injured or killed by Russian missiles and drones since February 2022. Now massive attacks on infrastructure will leave millions of Ukrainian families without heat in a brutal coming winter. And yesterday Ukraine’s children went back to school with some 1.6 million kids trying learn in communities subject to regular Russian air attacks. Congress and Trump must find an away to stop Putin. Meantime, you can help us help Ukraine’s kids! Www.ucap.help

Back to school in a country at war: As American children are returning to school in an annual ritual filled with excitement and anticipation, Ukraine's children, millions of whom have been displaced, return to learn with dread. Thousands of Ukraine's schools have been damaged or destroyed by Russian missiles and drones. Kids and teachers listen for the sirens, learn in shelters, worry about their families at home and miss their loved ones fighting on the frontlines. Yet these children are extraordinarily brave, looking forward to seeing friends, studying remotely when they need to. Deeply inspiring. America must help these children and this democracy. Help us help them. ucap.help

“Clearly, the priorities now are ending the war, expelling the Russians from all of Ukraine's sovereign territory, and holding Putin and his government accountable for years of war crimes. But doing everything possible to assure the health, education, and well-being of Ukraine's children and civilians must remain front and center, too,” writes Irwin Redlener, senior advisor to the Institute for Global Politics at Columbia University, in this op-ed.kyivindependent.com/russias-…

We are back in Ukraine. Good to see our partners helping us support kids impacted by this long, brutal war. Last night Russia launched one of the largest attacks on Kyiv killing at least 18, injuring dozens. Yesterday I made rounds with the doctors at the referral med center in Lviv and visited with many internally displaced children who are surviving and thriving amidst the violence. Help us help these children. UCAP.help. See our trip report: bit.ly/4gcnlfH

This year’s Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk felt different. The conversation has evolved beyond rebuilding what has been destroyed. There was a growing recognition that Ukraine is not simply a recipient of international support. It is a partner, a reformer, and increasingly a contributor to Europe’s future. Speaking at the conference, I reinforced that recovery is not only about infrastructure and investment. It is about ensuring that the next generation has the opportunity to learn, heal, and be prepared to be part of Ukraine’s future. urc-international.com/

When Regional Director Yuliia Kardash planned a visit to UCAP-funded programs serving children in Odesa and the surrounding region, a large-scale missile and drone attack made travel unsafe and forced her to postpone the trip. Last night, Odesa was hit again as part of a wave of Russian drone attacks across Ukraine. Read Yuliia's firsthand report from her recent visit in our latest newsletter: bit.ly/4x1xvpo ucap.help

I had an opportunity to speak with a group of Congressional members and staff earlier this week about the steep increase in war crimes being committed every day by relentless air attacks from Russian drones. These horrendous weapons are almost impossible to disarm. They roam residential communities far from any actual combat zones. These forays are called “human safaris” where civilians, including children, are literally hunted down and killed. As of last month, more than 3,540 children have been killed or injured; 1.5 million psychologically traumatized; 3-4 million school-age kids have seen their education disrupted. Sunday's attack by Russia on many civilian targets in Lviv Oblast was the largest ever in western Ukraine. Seven hours of pure hell delivered by 500 drones and dozens of hypersonic missiles, many of which were destroyed by Ukrainian defenses. I toured many of these sites today, including a partially destroyed kindergarten and other structures. And we walked among the ruins of a few homes in a suburb of Lviv. A 15 year old girl and her entire family ki**ed in their sleep. 📷There in the rubble, mixed in with the toys, pieces of furniture and a twisted baby carriage frame were the metal shards of a Russian missile. America must stand strong with this young, extraordinary democracy that is fighting a tyrant on Europe's eastern front. Please insist that Congress provide whatever support Ukraine needs as they fight a war that is our war , too. And help Ukraine's children directly by contributing to UCAP.help

We return to Ukraine next week - our 8th visit - to check on some of the dozens of projects supporting the needs of children impacted by the war. Millions have and are suffering from psychological trauma and/or prolonged disruption of their education. About 3,000 kids have been killed or injured and 20,000 abducted by Russia. Yet the country fights on. The bravery & resilience of Ukrainians is extraordinary. More than that, they cherish their democracy, their culture, their ability to create and innovate. Ukraine is a young vibrant democracy on the rise. But, so very sadly, America feels like a democracy on the decline with division, violence and a growing disrespect for Constitutional principles everywhere we look. Please support our work in Ukraine. The withdrawal of foreign aid has had a terrible impact. wwww.UCAP.help
