My dad ( @DrBerk ) died unexpectedly on Friday.
His life was marked by joy and humor, kindness and compassion, and a deep deep love for students, medicine, and his family.
He leaves behind a legacy and a family that misses him very much.

Training deep neural networks on large 3D medical images is difficult.
We developed a deep neural network that focuses computation on suspicious regions, enabling learning from hundreds of millions of pixels.

We don't interpret mammography in a vacuum - we integrate and cross-compare other modalities (US, MRI). Single modality DNNs (MG alone, US alone) don't capture this complexity @NanWu__ has an excellent paper out on the challenges of training multi-modal DNNs.
Do you know that multi-modal DNNs trained with vanilla SGD favor one of the input modalities and yield limited generalization? Check our paper at #ICML2022 where we characterize this phenomenon quantitatively and provide methods to overcome it: arxiv.org/pdf/2202.05306
