Of all the additions they made to the films, the character of Lurtz was perhaps one of the very best. Lurtz was never part of Tolkien’s story. He was created for The Fellowship of the Ring, and it’s hard to imagine the film without him. In the novel, Boromir is brought down by a group of Orcs before Aragorn reaches him. For the film, Peter Jackson’s team gave the Uruk-hai a leader, turning the climax into something much more personal, and giving the audience a villain to actively root against. Watching Aragorn face the warrior who killed Boromir gives the ending real emotional weight. It feels earned.
