Maybe a bit exaggerated, to be fair, but housing, a nanny/housekeeper, and preschool alone can easily run $20–25k a month. Everything else adds another $5–10k, leaving $5–10k a month. Factor in a vacation or two, and suddenly there’s not much left to save. Also, unlike most other places, people living in NYC often feel the need—and want—to get out of the city regularly for weekends and holidays. That adds up quickly too.
