What We Learned About Warehouse Automation at MODEX 2026 🤖Walking the MODEX show floor this year, it was clear to us that the automation conversation has matured. Operators are looking beyond flashy gimmicks and are laser focused on finding automated solutions that are proven, scalable, and running today.
We spoke with technology leaders across robotics, goods-to-person systems, and yard and dock operations, among others, and they all echo the need for a realistic automation approach.
Here's what companies including Swisslog, AutoStore™, Automha S.p.A., Attabotics, Kardex, Yard Management Solutions, and Kaleris told us they are doing to close the gap between automation ambition and automation reality:
-Deploying AS/RS and goods-to-person systems that maximize throughput in tight footprints — including deep-freeze environments.
-Using AMRs and mobile cobots to automate handoffs between storage and the dock.
-Bringing intelligence to the yard and dock, where delays have historically been invisible and expensive.
-Building systems designed to scale incrementally, without requiring a full shutdown or rip-and-replace.
We'd love to hear from you: What automation investment has actually moved the needle in your operations? Drop your experience in the comments and keep the conversation going.

Need more vision? 👁️
Just add an additional pair of eyes to the robot.
@VW sought to automate one of its car body production processes previously performed manually. The process involved taking production parts from a container on the floor, inserting them into a jig, and then having an industrial robot transfer them for further processing. ⚙️
To do so they choose to use a 3D system from @photoneo. PhoXi 3D Scanner could accurately identify the position and orientation of each part in the container, allowing the robot to grasp and insert the parts into the jig precisely.
The high-accuracy 3D scanning of the 3D Scanner allowed the FANUC Europe robot to reliably locate and grasp the parts, improving the stability and repeatability of the automated process.
