I condemn the recent killing of a Serbian @UNIFIL_ peacekeeper in Lebanon. Seven peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL have now been killed & several more have been wounded since the escalation in hostilities since March this year. These attacks must stop.

I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.   All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”   I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.   I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

I'm deeply concerned about the possible intensification of instability in Venezuela, the potential impact on the region & the precedent it may set for how relations between & among states are conducted. The situation is critical, but it's still possible to prevent a wider & more destructive conflagration. I call on all Venezuelan actors to engage in an inclusive, democratic dialogue in which all sectors of society can determine their future, with full respect of human rights, the rule of law & the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people. My message to young people, civil society & other climate activists: You're on the right side of history. You speak for the majority. Keep it up. Don’t lose hope. It’s We the Peoples vs. the polluters and the profiteers. Together, we can win.

Last year, I had the privilege of travelling to the Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal. This visit re-affirmed my conviction that his timeless teachings of peace, compassion & service to others are the pathway to a better world for all. My best wishes to all celebrating #VesakDay.

I am deeply alarmed by reports of mass graves in Gaza.   Independent investigators must be allowed immediate access.   The families of the dead have a right to know what happened. The world has a right to accountability for any violations of int’l law that may have taken place.
