There is just one week remaining before the launch of the 2026 World Alzheimer Report, focusing this year on dementia clinical trials. You don't need to be a neuroscientist to decipher the report! The report illuminates how clinical trials work and how they are experienced by those participating, as well as highlights the challenges to the dementia treatment pipeline. Ahead of the launch, ADI is sharing an early preview into the report for our global network. Chapter 2, 'Understanding clinical trials: How new dementia treatments are developed,' provides an accessible introduction to clinical trials and foundational explanations of how new dementia treatments are developed through the rigorous clinical trial process. Clinical trials are the foundation of modern medicine, providing the evidence needed to determine whether new treatments are safe, effective, and suitable for widespread use. Every medicine currently prescribed for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia has reached people affected by the condition only after progressing through stages of scientific testing. This chapter follows the journey of a potential medicine from laboratory discovery, through testing in cells and animals, into carefully designed studies involving people, and ultimately to regulatory approval and use in everyday clinical practice. It explains the different phases of clinical trials, why most experimental treatments fail, and why the drug development process, although slow and expensive, is critical for protecting patients and generating reliable evidence. The chapter will unpack terms such as “Phase 3,” “placebo-controlled,” and “double-blind,” explaining what they mean in the context of developing a potential dementia treatment, as well as examining what these development pipelines mean in a global context, including the complex organisational and research structures through which potential treatments are developed, tested, and brought towards clinical use. To learn more about how new dementia treatments are developed, register for our World Alzheimer Report 2026 launch webinar: A new era in dementia clinical trials, taking place on 21 September 2026 at 14:00 BST.
