UNBS MARKET SURVEILLANCE INTENSIFIES LPG SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE INSPECTIONS IN KAMPALA METROPOLITAN AREA.
The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) Market Surveillance team is conducting inspections of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) products and handling practices across the Kampala Metropolitan Area to strengthen compliance with safety and quality requirements.
The inspections are targeting common compliance gaps, including mislabelling, under-filling of gas cylinders, cylinder swapping (cross-filling), the use of cylinders beyond their service life, and other practices that may compromise consumer safety.
UNBS is committed to enforcing applicable standards and requirements to ensure that LPG cylinders meet the required safety and quality standards. Businesses are urged to comply with the established requirements, as consumer safety is non-negotiable.

Hon. Sanjay Tanna, Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, speaking at the 32nd Uganda International Trade Fair at the UMA Show Grounds, Lugogo, emphasised the importance of formalising Uganda’s entrepreneurial and manufacturing sector to secure the country’s economic future.
“While Uganda is abundantly blessed with natural resources, resource wealth alone is not enough. It is the drive, ingenuity and formalisation of our entrepreneurial class that is truly vital to securing Uganda’s economic future.”
He called for the Trade Fair to serve as a statement of intent that Uganda is no longer a supermarket for foreign goods, but is positioning itself as a manufacturing hub.

How do we know the fuel you buy meets quality requirements?
During the Fuel marking and Quality monitoring sensitisation of local authorities and oil marketing companies in Eastern Uganda, the field supervisor of the Fuel marking and Quality monitoring program, Mr. Peter Kitimbo, explained the fuel quality monitoring process. He said,
Through a government petroleum quality monitoring programme, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and UNBS work together to monitor petroleum products across the supply chain.
Mobile laboratories move across the country, testing fuel at service stations and other points of supply. With modern testing technology, samples can be checked on site and within minutes, helping identify products that do not meet required specifications.
The programme also helps to detect and address:
🔹Fuel adulteration
🔹Smuggling and illegal fuel supply
🔹Non-compliant petroleum products
🔹Practices that undermine fair competition
For consumers, this means greater confidence in the quality of the fuel they purchase. For compliant businesses, it supports a fairer marketplace.

When you pay for 10 litres, you should receive 10 litres.
During the Fuel marking and Quality monitoring sensitisation of local authorities and oil marketing companies in Eastern Uganda, Mr. Boniface Kapere from UNBS emphasized the UNBS role of ensuring fairness in trade
That is where legal metrology comes in.
Legal metrology ensures that measurements used in commercial transactions are accurate, consistent and verifiable; whether it is fuel at a service station, goods sold by weight or commodities measured by volume.
In Uganda, UNBS, as the mandated inspector for legal metrology, verifies and controls measuring instruments to protect consumers, support fair trade and ensure that businesses are also treated fairly.
Accurate measurement also supports:
🔹Fair taxation
🔹Transparent trade across borders
🔹Consumer protection
🔹Fair competition
🔹Confidence in commercial transactions
The measurement must be right, because what you pay for should be what you receive.
