The work of University Maths Schools extends well beyond their sixth-form classrooms - and there’s much to celebrate 👏
In 2024-25, outreach across the network reached more than 10,000 young people, creating opportunities to explore mathematics, deepen their understanding and take their interest further.
We’re pleased to share a new report commissioned by U-Maths from the @ObserveMathsEd at the @UniofNottingham, evaluating a range of established University Maths Schools’ outreach programmes for students aged 11-16.
The results are striking.
Across programmes designed to enhance GCSE Mathematics outcomes, participants achieved between half and one grade higher on average than matched students with similar educational and demographic characteristics.
Participants were also significantly more likely than their matched counterparts to go on to study A level Further Mathematics, with differences typically around 15 percentage points.
These are very encouraging findings for outreach teams across the network - and for the thousands of young people who take part in their programmes.
The researchers are rightly careful about what can be concluded. The analysis controls for a wide range of differences between participants and comparison students, but factors that cannot be captured in national data - such as motivation and engagement -may also play a part.
That makes this strong evidence of association rather than definitive proof of causation. It also gives us a platform to build from: improving how we gather evidence, understanding more about what works, and extending high-quality mathematical opportunities to more young people as the University Maths Schools network grows.

Great to see @UMathsNetwork calling for more maths free schools.
"The evidence now supports the next phase of growth: opening more university maths schools and extending this specialist provision to many more young people"
@theNSN stands ready to help make it happen.
Some brilliant next steps for University Maths School students 👏
A recent feature in @thetimes highlighted a number of high-achieving Maths School students choosing degree apprenticeships and company-sponsored degrees alongside more traditional university routes.
Students from Surrey Maths School, @LUSoM_ and @kingsmathschool are heading to @Dyson, @RollsRoyceGroup, @BAESystemsInc and @DeutscheBank – in some cases choosing these routes over offers from universities including Imperial, UCL, King’s, Warwick, Manchester and Durham.
The reasons behind their choices are varied: the opportunity to combine academic study with substantial professional experience; greater job security after graduation; earning while studying; and graduating without tuition-fee debt.
The article also looks beyond this year’s leavers, featuring King’s Maths School alumnus Eito, who went on to study Computer Science at The @UniofOxford and is now founder and CEO of AI security company Sealgate.
Together, their stories offer a brilliant snapshot of the breadth of destinations open to Maths School students - and the different ways they are choosing to use their mathematics beyond sixth form.
U-Maths CEO Dan Abramson also reflected on the wider picture:
"University maths schools have high demand, exceptional results and impressive onward destinations. Current and planned provision will offer places to only around 1,000 new students each year, while young people in many parts of the country remain beyond easy travelling distance of a school. The evidence now supports the next phase of growth: opening more university maths schools and extending this specialist provision to many more young people"
A great spotlight on Maths School students and alumni - and on where a strong mathematical education can take them.

A huge congratulations to students across University Maths Schools on an exceptional set of A Level results! 🎉
More than 500 students across six regions received their results this year, with 74% of all grades at A*/A and an A as the average grade across all entries.
University Maths Schools also took three of the top five places nationally for the proportion of A* grades in @thetimes A Level league table, while 1 in 8 students secured a place at @UniofOxford or @Cambridge_Uni
A special congratulations to Surrey Maths School on their first ever set of results, placing them first in the region for both average point score and the proportion of students achieving AAB+.
A brilliant set of results across the network - huge congratulations to all the students and staff who made them possible 👏

There isn't one route into a career that uses mathematics - and that was one of the key messages students took away from the first U-Maths Futures North Careers Event @LancasterUni
Held as part of this year's U-Maths Student Conference, the event brought together professionals and alumni to share their experiences through a careers panel, interactive workshops and an inspiring keynote from @Aoife_Hunt
Students particularly valued hearing about different career journeys, learning more about university and degree apprenticeship pathways, and seeing how mathematics is applied in fields ranging from finance to crowd modelling. Many also highlighted the opportunity to ask questions and hear honest reflections from people working across a range of sectors.
A huge thank you to our panellists, workshop facilitators, keynote speaker and everyone who gave their time to support the event. By sharing your experiences so openly, you helped students better understand the breadth of opportunities available to them.

Alongside this year's Student Conference, we were delighted to host the inaugural U-Maths Futures South Careers Event at King's College London.
The event brought together employers, professionals, universities and U-Maths alumni, giving students the opportunity to explore the wide range of careers and pathways where mathematical skills are valued through employer conversations, interactive workshops and an inspiring keynote from @eugenievt
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive:
📈 85% of students reported a better understanding of mathematical career pathways
💬 Conversations with employers, professionals and alumni were consistently highlighted as one of the most valuable aspects of the day
✨ Many students also said they discovered careers they hadn't previously considered
One of the real highlights was seeing so many U-Maths alumni return to share their experiences. From university study and degree apprenticeships to careers across a range of industries, they offered honest advice, relatable insights and a powerful reminder of the opportunities that lie ahead for current students.
A huge thank you to all of our exhibitors, speakers, workshop leaders, alumni, volunteers and school staff who gave their time and expertise to help students explore the many opportunities that mathematics can offer.

We're looking back on an incredible three days at this year's inaugural U-Maths Student Conference.
Around 200 students from nine University Maths Schools came together at Lancaster University for three days of mathematical enrichment, inspiring keynote talks, university experiences and the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers from across the country.
The feedback speaks for itself:
⭐ 97% of students reported an overall positive experience.
⭐ 94% said they would recommend the conference to another student.
Students particularly valued meeting peers from other University Maths Schools, hearing from inspiring speakers and exploring new areas of mathematics in a collaborative and supportive environment.
As the first event of its kind, the Student Conference marked an exciting milestone for the U-Maths network, creating new opportunities for students to learn from one another and experience being part of a national community.
A huge thank you to @LancasterUni, @LUSoM_ , our speakers, workshop leaders, volunteers and the many staff from across the network who made the conference such a memorable experience.

Earlier this month, 12 female students from across the U-Maths network visited Hg's London office for an inspiring day exploring careers in technology investment, AI and private equity.
Throughout the day, students:
💡 Heard from senior women across Hg as they shared their career journeys and advice
🤖 Worked alongside Hg volunteers in an AI design challenge, developing and pitching innovative product ideas
🤝 Networked with professionals from across the firm over lunch, learning more about careers, university and opportunities in the technology sector
Experiences like these help students understand the breadth of careers that value mathematical thinking, while building confidence and making connections with people working in the industry.
A huge thank you to Hg and @TheHgFoundatio1 for hosting such an engaging day, to the many volunteers who gave their time, and to the staff who supported students to attend.
