Gaussian splatting stopped being a research demo this week. At IBC on 25 September, Nokia streamed dynamic Gaussian splats to Samsung phones and XREAL glasses over plain MPEG DASH. Not a bespoke viewer — the actual stack: GS4 encoding (MPEG V-PCC Gaussian Splat Coding, ISO/IEC 23090-5), V3C, MP4/ISOBMFF containers, DASH delivery (ISO/IEC 23090-10). Rendered in real time on the device. Read that list again. Those are the same boxes that carry H.264 to your television. Splats just got a container, a codec ID and an adaptive bitrate ladder. What that actually means: Delivery is now a standards problem. Standards problems get solved. Slowly, by committee, with terrible acronyms — but they get solved, and somebody ships a decoder. Rendering is not a standards problem. Every frame, you depth-sort hundreds of thousands of primitives and alpha-blend them in order, on a battery, in front of someone's eyes. No committee fixes that. Silicon does. And the timing is unkind, because memory is the one thing nobody has spare. Samsung plans to at least double HBM4 output in 2027. CXMT just pushed G5 DRAM into mass production at 11.95nm half-pitch, ~50% more dies per wafer. Every bit of spare bandwidth is being bid away by datacenter AI.
