🚨 NEWS: NHS hospitals are facing substantial unpaid maternity bills from overseas patients who are not entitled to free treatment, according to newly published Freedom of Information figures.
Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust recorded £245,216 in outstanding maternity charges from the 2025/26 financial year, with 42 of 49 invoices still unpaid in full or in part.
Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust separately reported £33,049 in outstanding maternity charges across three financial years.
Under NHS rules, maternity care cannot be refused or delayed because a patient cannot pay, but those liable for treatment remain responsible for the charges.
