Disability can happen to anyone at any time.
It’s not due to deconditioning or a moral failing.
Many chronic illnesses are the result of a viral infection from which the body never recovers.
We need more awareness, treatments & clean air to reduce viral spread.

An extraordinarily timely thread on how dual practice is doomed to failure in Alberta…

Madame la Ministre, and PM @MarkJCarney we fervently hope you will intervene to stop Alberta’s Bill 11, just as Tony Clement and Stephen Harper did when Ralph Klein tried this « dual practice », two tier, cash to jump the queue health care in 2006. #cdnpoli #abpoli

Earlier today, a tragic bus accident in Calgary claimed multiple lives and left people injured, including a police officer.
To the families enduring this heartbreaking loss, to those recovering, and to everyone grieving in the community, know that Canadians are holding you close in our hearts.
Thank you to the first responders who acted swiftly to care for the injured.

I couldn't read for over a year after I got sick. I'd read a page and retain nothing. As my brain started working again, I'd have to read a page about 5x and challenge myself on what I read before moving on to the next one.
It was distressing. I don't ever want to do that again.

The total cost of Smith’s Separatist referendum is $200 million
That SHOULD have paid for:
🏥 20 Urgent Care Clinics
🌀 40 MRI Machine Labs
👩⚕️ 500 Family Doctors
🎗️ 8,000 Cancer Treatments
🩺 1,000,000 Mammograms
Smith chose her separatist UCP pals over saving lives
The total financial cost of the October 19, 2026, referendum will be between $170 million and $200 million representing a major waste of taxpayers' money.
The UCP government has spent $4 million of public funds promoting the referendum. This includes a $300,000 promotional website, a $1.5 million economic analysis on secession, and over $365,000 for a televised premier address and social media promotional videos.

If only there was something we could do to prevent the spread in hospitals and in the community. 😒
“Havoc is hitting hospitals as patients hospitalized for some other acute illness are getting COVID, adding to the complexity of care — and Alberta’s COVID vaccinations aren’t available yet, and the province’s low vaccination rate isn’t helping.”

Healthcare is a mess in AB right now.
And the people in charge aren't doing anything to fix it. In fact, the things they are doing appear designed to make it worse.
Why should Albertans suffer so that GoA can sit on a surplus?

Everyone voting in this referendum should see this video.
No exceptions.
Demonizing immigrants, permanent or not, is cruel & a waste of our time. We're better off asking Danielle Smith about how she wastes our HC budget on her frivolous policies.

WATCH: The immigration experiment that changes everything
We hit the streets and gave people a syringe representing Alberta’s entire healthcare budget and asked them to drain out how much they think non-permanent residents use.

It’s absolutely bonkers that Alberta would consider even for a second turning our backs on refugees from Ukraine and other war torn countries.

43,500 Ukrainians in Alberta with non-permanent migrant status. They'd be affected by Danielle Smith's referendum questions.
Doubt they're explicit targets of the proposed crackdown on services for temporary residents, but they represent 1 in 7 of them. cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/u…

Blaming immigrants is a distraction from the real-world problems facing our public services.
In our latest video with Linda Hoang, Avery talks about how the government created their own problem and is using newcomers as a scapegoat.

Cognitive recovery after COVID isn't complete, and that's the optimistic reading of this study.
92 people with post-COVID, a full neuropsych battery, retested a year later. Memory got better. Processing speed didn't.🧵
Cognitive phenotypes and neuropsychological trajectories in post-COVID-19 syndrome: a 12-month follow-up study
🚨LongC0VID brains: memory often rebounds within a year, but attention and processing speed stay stuck. New 12-month study of 92 patients shows selective recovery, not full return to baseline. The daily life consequences...... 👇😧
➡️This again interesting Spanish 12-month longitudinal study followed 92 adults with post-COVID19 syndrome (PCS: mean age ~49 years, predominantly women) who had previously undergone comprehensive neuropsychological assessment,
➡️Participants were retested after roughly 1 year using the same battery covering attention/processing speed, memory, executive functions, visuospatial abilities, and language,
➡️Pre–post comparisons (Wilcoxon tests with FDR correction) showed significant gains mainly in verbal memory (learning and recall measures), visual memory, matrix reasoning, inhibitory control, and certain action-processing tasks (fluency and naming),
➡️In contrast, attention and processing-speed measures remained largely unchanged,
➡️Using a domain-based phenotype approach, the proportion of participants classified as having normal cognition increased (from 65.1 % to 77.1 % at the −1 SD cutoff and from 83.1 % to 86.7 % at the stricter cutoff),
➡️Residual impairment was predominantly single-domain and driven by attention/processing speed,
➡️Multi-domain profiles that persisted also frequently involved this domain,
➡️Exploratory analyses linked neither cognitive reserve nor affective symptoms strongly to trajectories,
➡️The sample characteristics note that 51 % reported COVID-19 reinfection and 90 % were vaccinated. The study does not analyse or report any specific effects of reinfection or vaccination status on cognitive trajectories, phenotypes, or recovery rates,
➡️Overall, the data indicate selective, partial cognitive recovery in PCS, with attention and processing speed emerging as the most persistent vulnerabilities.
‼️So, one year later, memory and some higher-level thinking skills improved in people with LongC0VID syndrome, yet attention and processing speed barely recovered, leaving a lasting vulnerability.
In everyday terms: trouble focusing and thinking quickly can still make ordinary things harder, staying concentrated while driving in traffic, flying as a pilot, keeping up with a complicated conversation, meeting work deadlines, or using phones and computers without getting overwhelmed.
Memory often gets better (so people may forget less), but the stubborn attention problems can leave them slower, more mentally drained, and make it tougher to fully get back to work or social life even when other thinking skills improve. Sound familiar???
