Concerning... "Industry insiders have told @NavyLookout that two more of the five remaining Type 23s will almost certainly have to be declared unseaworthy in the next few months [while delivery of the new Type 26 & Type 31 frigates seemingly continues to slip]."

True in Spain too. Every landlord in Madrid and Barcelona screens the renters now. This is an obvious consequence of rent control. The most vulnerable, ostensible protected by the legislation, are in fact excluded from the rental market: if you cannot be evicted for non payment, then you are too risky a renter.
A friend of mine had to do a 15 minute interview about his job, income, previous rental history, etc, in order to *view* a flat. Luckily for him, he has a well-paid job, has lived in England all his life, and an impeccable rental history. I feel bad for people who don't.

i think there’s this feeling that we can afford to be picky with infrastructure because the uk is a rich country, and i worry that feeling isn’t going to go away until its way too obvious we’re not that rich anymore

I’d love to be appointed head of the charity commission, maybe the single highest leverage appointment possible. The sector is completely out of control & the source of so much rot and suffering. It should be a top 3 priority
When people donated their hard earned money to a charity to build and maintain London’s bridges over the last 850 years - I can guarantee you that not one of them expected that their money would be diverted to organisations called:

Britain's establishment has isolated our country diplomatically. As I said over a year ago, we risk losing the Falklands over the negotiating table as everybody else falls behind Argentina -- including Europe, where Spain would see it as a prelude to the annexation of Gib.

Windrush was not some grand historical event - the only reason we should teach it in schools is as an example of how elites can twist past events into new hagiographic narratives to suit modern mores.
I know you're being facetious, but one of my ex gfs had never heard of Windrush, apartheid, a sw*stika etc. White British girl. If you don't raise kids properly, then send them to certain non selective schools (state or fee paying), just home school with a private tutor!

Visiting Hagia Sophia is now a miserable experience. You are restricted to the balcony, they have roped off the balustrades, they have covered up the icons in the centre, they hector you to keep moving. No longer is it a place to roam and muse within.

It is time to admit that the Commonwealth does not only not serve its purpose, but works against its premise of post-imperial comity. This is because it has become a little more than a poorly attended biannual summit whose only purpose seems to be to for Caribbean countries to lobby Britain for reparations. This does nothing but worsen these relationships. My view was Botchwey was the last chance to try and pull the organisation back from this dead end but this had clearly failed. CHOGM is going ahead without any major reforms to its structure or meaningful agenda, resented by those in government involved in it as a result. It is now only a matter of time before Prime Ministers stop attending our next King cuts the cord and eventually a new CANZUK-type summit or body is pursued.

The most miserable thing, whereby love and affection with family is reduced to a permissible action. How rotten.

If you think about the cost of immigrant workers in the care system in terms of wages plus long term welfare/benefits for them and family with ILR....it might be significantly more financially efficient for the state to top up care worker wages to the extent that our unemployed fancied it. No one's that into it for 20k. What about 50k? 75k?
Care homes have long ran a business model based on an ability to pay unskilled wages for skilled (and exhausting) work. They can do so because of the implicit offer of a visa Mahmood is right to call time on this. If jobs are not domestically attractive, employers must do better

Polygamy is illegal in the UK. Yet our welfare system pays out benefits to multiple spouses. Conservatives @RicHolden helped introduce legislation to stop this today.
