Honored to help present the James Madison Award, the highest recognition given by the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, to the sisters and niece of my dear friend, @ddfonline. Diana and I served on the FOIFT Board together (in addition to my role as president of @IRE_NICAR where she was executive director when she passed away last spring). On stage, her family revealed she left FOIFT $25,000 to continue the fight for open records and open government in Texas. Amazed by her generosity and also not surprised by her ability to make such an important impact even now. Miss you, DeeDee! ❤️

The family and friends of Diana Fuentes, our posthumous James Madison Award recipient; Spirit of FOI Award winners; & @GarrettHaake & @tplohetski provided a touching and informative @TxFOIFT John Henry Faulk Awards luncheon today. And a shoutout to all the students attending!

Lots of insight into immigration coverage at @TxFOIFT conference. Thanks @hinklej, @SandraESanchez, @Perla_Trevizo & @AleshireLaw. Aleshire makes the point that the Tx Info Act remains in place, despite a local official saying they have to check with ICE on releasing info.

Worried about clampdowns on college campus free speech - “death by a thousand cuts” - @bklosterboer says it now includes public universities scrutinizing a professor’s syllabus, even removing teaching on Plato because of queer theory. “It’s almost back to the McCarthy era.”

In opening session, @dhiott, who was fired at KUT by UT-Austin administrators, says, “I do believe they fired me because I corrected their narrative.” UT cited safety issues over KUT Festival. Hiott disputed that & surmises UT didn’t want an event with “provocative opinions.”

We are off and running @TxFOIFT state conference with a terrific discussion on campus free speech, including @dhiott, formerly of KUT, plus ACLU of Texas and a Texas State reporter. Lots more to come today on open government and the First Amendment.
