Had tons of fun this week catching redside dace for a seasonal remodelling project with @PitcherLab. So nice to work in healthy populations in the USA, and to dream about what we could have in Ontario with some concerted conservation action.
The calcium sheath helps maintain the structural integrity of the gills, which forces water to flow through the channels between the lamellae (where the fish want it). When I experimentally removed the calcium, water was able to bypass these channels. 3/5
So happy this is out - 5 years ago I noticed a weird calcified sheath surrounding the gill filaments of some killifish, and I finally think I might know why this calcium is present. TL;DR - it improves the efficiency of water flow

Love it! We've been doing the same sort of thing with redside dace @PitcherLab
Here's @csz_scz applauding the amazing @giuliasrossi in absentia for winning a travel award for her research in Australia. Hope you're having fun down under!
Baby deer mice survive at high altitude thanks to metabolic depression and a little help from mom to warm back up. Amazing work and lots of new questions from Cayleih Robertson @MacCompPhysiol @csz_scz
Fascinating talk from @JackieLebz - beetles take a sledgehammer to their mitochondria to drop metabolic rate over winter @csz_scz
